Eko Hot Blog reports that a veteran journalist, Dayo Duyile, is one of the students to be conferred with a doctorate degree (PhD) as the University of Lagos (UNILAG) holds its 53rd convocation ceremonies.
The ceremonies will begin on Friday, January 13, and end on Sunday, January 22.
Speaking on Tuesday at a pre-convocation media briefing, the UNILAG vice-chancellor, Folasade Ogunsola, disclosed that Duyile is the oldest male graduating student.
Born in October 1942, the octogenarian is a former provost of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ).

Meanwhile, apart from Duyile, an 82-year-old grandmother, Mrs Obiageli Okonji, will also be receiving her Master’s certificate.
While Duyile will receive his PhD certificate in Mass Communications, Mrs Okonji will graduate from the Guidance and Counselling Department in the university’s Faculty of Education.
Mrs Okonji is said to be the oldest female graduating student.
The vice-chancellor also disclosed that Duyile “was the Daily Times of Nigeria journalist who covered the opening ceremony event of the University of Lagos on October 3, 1962.”
In 2018, the veteran journalist told the executive director of Media Career Development Network, Lekan Otufodunrin, that he always wanted to get a doctorate degree.
“I have always wanted to get a PhD in mass communication that I teach and journalism that I have practised for 55 years since twenty-five years old. It’s never too late to get an additional qualification, including a PhD,” he said.
Meanwhile, the UNILAG convocation ceremonies will, for the first time in many years, feature no single undergraduate among the graduands.
The development is not unconnected to the prolonged industrial actions by the university workers that paralysed both academic and non-academic activities across major Nigerian public universities in 2022.
Giving a breakdown of the statistics of graduating students, the vice-chancellor revealed that a total of 2,251 students will receive degrees at different levels.
“A total of 2,251 graduating students will receive their degrees, diplomas and certificates. Out of this number, 67 will receive postgraduate diplomas, 2,119 will receive masters degrees, while 65 will receive doctorate degrees,” Ogunsola added.
