The uninformed or stranger might be forgiven for mistaking Lagos for the war torn middle-east country of Yemen at first sight.
What started as a peaceful public agitation against police brutality and call for police reform two weeks ago morphed into an orgy of violence after hoodlums, who were suspected to be hired by politicians, disrupted protests and unleash terror on peaceful demonstrators.
The unpleasant situation degenerated into a full-blown melee on Tuesday after soldiers opened fire on peaceful protesters, leaving 15 people dead. The incident sparked widespread outrage with both local and international public figures condemning the government action.
Hoodlums capitalised on the ensuing uneasiness and trepidation that enveloped the state to perpetrate all manner of nefarious and despicable illegalilty.
In the midst of the 24-hour curfew imposed by the state government, the hoodlums went on wanton destruction and unbridled violence. Private and government properties were looted and razed. Security operatives formation were not spared as police stations were set ablaze.
