Literary icon, Professor Wole Soyinka has spoken on why students of Government Science Secondary School in Kankara, Katsina State were abducted during President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to his state.

In a statement issued on Monday, the award winning playwright said the abduction is a slap on the President’s face and a challenge from the criminals who abducted the students.

Soyinka noted that this is yet another evidence to buttress his claim that President Buhari is not in charge of Nigeria.

Eko Hot Blog had earlier reported that armed bandits had raided Government Science Secondary School, and abducted a yet to be ascertained number of students, an incident that has generated national and international outcry.

Soyinka held that the fact that the attack took place in the President’s state at the same time he decided to visit home echoes as a flat out challenge by the bandits.

The statement reads “It is merely the latest in the serial stinging slaps across the face of the nation, and it draws blood from every sensing citizen. Over five years since Chibok, we have yet to anticipate, and to guard against a repeat. We continue to hand over innocent wards cheaply, en masse, to the agents of darkness and despair.”

Soyinka also stated that Nigeria is at war and that the government needs to be more proactive and practical in protecting Nigerians from the onslaught of the agents of darkness.

“A government refuses to accept that, as indicated several times over, the nation is at war. At war within itself, and that it requires drastic measures, away from spasmodic responses after the dread deed, if there is any will left over to salvage what is left of nationhood,” he said.

Soyinka further called on the government to move swiftly towards the rescue of the students and overhaul the nation’s security apparatus who have proven incompetent in tackling Nigeria’s rising tide of insecurity problems.

“What is tragically demonstrated daily in all departments of citizen survival is the need to overhaul the nation’s structural existence – beginning, obviously, with the imperative of guaranteeing that very existence,” his statement added.
