Prevent Another ASUU Strike By All Means- NAUS Begs FG

Thousands of Nigerians have taken to social media to denounce the ongoing strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) which has kept Nigerian students from the classrooms since March 23rd, 2020.

As earlier reported by Eko Hot Blog, the Academic Staff Union of Universities unanimously embarked upon an industrial action following a number of irreconcilable differences with the Federal Government.

Central to the union’s feud with the federal government was the introduction of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), undisbursed funds for revitalization of public universities, amongst other demands.

The government had initially remained unmoved in its position, but a compulsory shutdown of all public and private institutions occasioned by the coronavirus pandemic caused negotiations to be suspended.

Negotiations consequently resumed with the resumption of normal service; and, after much deliberations, the Federal Government finally decided to disburse the sum of N70m for unpaid allowances and also temporarily exempt the lecturers from being enrolled in the IPPIS.

It had looked like ASUU would finally cede ground and call off the lingering strike action, but the university teachers took a surprising U-turn and decided to engage further consultations with the different chapters of the union.

Furthermore, chances of bringing this imbroglio to an end before the end of the year suffered a fatal blow when ASUU postponed its next meeting with the Federal Government indefinitely, much to the frustration and chagrin of Nigerian students.

With the situation becoming grimmer and bleaker by the day, Nigerians have ultimately taken to social media to demand an immediate end to the lingering strike action.
