41 persons have been confirmed dead in a wrecked boat which was recovered from Lake Albert, inbetween Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Official sources made this known to PANA on Saturday, adding that the mishap had taken place on Wednesday.

An administrative source in Bunia, capital of the province of Ituri in the North-East of DR Congo added that the outboard canoe belonging to a Ugandan capsized after a strong wind on Lake Albert.

The search continued in the hope of finding more than 80 other missing persons.

Ekohotblog understands that shipwrecks often result in DR Congo due to overloading and dilapidation of the boats.

Other reasons include the lack of life jackets on board, and night navigation, and the fact that many passengers cannot swim.
