Opinion: 2020! What a Year

Published

on

It was 4:24am that morning when I saw the news, the 33 year-old techpreneur of Gokada, Fahim Salem, had been murdered in a manner that, I am sure, left tightness in many people’s throats. A few weeks later, I heard the news of the death of the Ibidunni Ighodalo, Pastor Ituah Ighodalo’s wife and then a few weeks more, the Wakanda King, Chadwick Boseman had passed unto the beyond. Then a few months down the line, the #ENDSARS protest almost shut down the nation. The protest started as a cry against the incessant killings of youths by a special anti-robbery squad of the Nigerian Police and even most sadly, youths were killed as the protest continued. Some police officers also lost their lives during this incident and one can only imagine what their families would be going through this festive season.

One is tempted to be in a dark and gloomy place because of these preventable, unjust, and senseless killings and deaths that occurred this year coupled with the global pandemic that has changed the order of our lives and delayed a lot of plans, if not totally cancelled some plans. However, if we think deeply enough, we would be thankful. Been intentional and thoughtful about deliberate things that have worked and is still working in our lives, communities, and nations is beneficial to us in a lot of ways.

For a fact, no one or family ever prays or even expect that a loved one would be taken away from them, however, being grateful for the impactful live the individual has spent and the imprints of positive influences she/he has left can prevent loved ones from slipping into depression.

Deliberately calling up positive thoughts about the lost one soothes the pain and the grief which can make the loss bearable but not wiped off: no parent can thoroughly get over the loss of a child or the loss of a partner.

One has to be intentional about the good things that have occurred in this outgoing year so fear does not become the spring board from which we will operate from in the new incoming year. We must work towards healing emotionally, mentally, and psychologically so that we will have the clarity to plan ahead, expect and work towards the best for this incoming year.

I am of the Christian faith and a certain quote of the bible has always been my go-to place for succor, stability, and peace.

“though the fig tree may not blossom, nor fruits be on the vines, though the labor of the olive may fail and the fields yield no food, though the flock may be cut off from the fold, and there be no herd in the stall, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength, HE will make my feet like the deer’s feet, and HE will make me walk upon my high places.”
