Governors yet to take a position on state police – Fayemi
Shortly after President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday met with state governors and security chiefs in Aso Rock, Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) and Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi while speaking with State House Correspondents made it known that the details of the meeting bothered around insecurity and creation of State police. He said that no position has been taken on the creation of state police in the country by the 36 states governors.
Briefing the Journalists, he said they have not taken a position on the creation of state police, highlighting that experience varies among states.
He said while some of his colleagues are in support, others are against it.
Fayemi noted that while some governors had disclosed their ability to support such state and local government police, others were still battling with the challenge of paying existing workers’ salaries.
He said the state police and other issues relating to the security challenges of the country would be discussed extensively during the forthcoming National Economic Council (NEC).
