Why I Rejected Fela’s Marraige Proposal – Onyeka Onwenu Explains

Legendary Nigerian singer Onyeka Onwenu brought it to light that Music legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti asked her to marry him in the 80’s.

Onyeka told the story in her new autobiography, titled My Father’s Daughter, EKO HOT BLOG gathered.

However, she claimed to have rejected Fela’s proposal during her visit to his club because of his other wives.

She believes that she is a possessive lady and Fela’s love for women was hard to comprehend.

Telling the story of Fela asking for her hand in marriage., Onyeka wrote: “My second encounter with Fela was in 1984, a few years later I just got back from America. He just got out of prison.

“He was detained for attempting to travel with his group for a concert in London with the sum of 1,600 pounds for their hotel accommodation. Back then, carrying any amount of foreign currency was against one of several decrees enacted. by the Buhari/Idiagbon military junta.

“After he got out of prison, Fela sent his mutual friend, the journalist Onuorah Udenwa who is now a US-based pastor, to bring me to his club. I thought perhaps he wanted to thank me for supporting him while in prison but it was nothing like that.

“He did not even speak about the article that I wrote to support him.. Fela asked me to marry him and I was flattered. I was grateful to him for having the honor of wanting me to be his companion., And I still rejected him..”

The music legend went on to say that as she waited at the club to see him., She noticed that her Queen (dancing-wives) looked at her with contempt.

“They would pass by all the time, whispering about me.. They were very hostile and very self-evident about it.

“I brought this to his attention and told him that I was a possessive lover. and would not be able to cope as an appendage to his harem but Fela laughed.”
