55 Years After Tafawa Balewa Was Assassinated, These Are The Assets He Left

Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was born in 1912 in the town of Tafawa Balewa, Bauchi State in northeastern Nigeria.

He was a very polite man and originally his father was an employee of the mayor.

He studied at the Katsina Teachers Training College from (1928 to 1933), then became a teacher, and principal of Bauchi Middle School.

Tafawa Balewa studied at the London Teachers’ Training College from (1945 to 1946), where he obtained a teacher’s certificate.

During World War II he expressed his interest in politics, setting up the Bauchi Discussion Circle. He later became involved in clerical politics where he was elected vice president of the Northern Teachers Union.

In 1952, he became Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Minister of Transport in 1954, and later became the leader of the NPC in the National Assembly. He became Nigeria’s first prime minister after the country gained independence in 1960.

In 1966, a military coup overthrew him and the late Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was assassinated.
