Messi Named World’s Highest Paid Athlete Ahead Of Ronaldo

Over the last 12 months, Barcelona and Argentina superstar, Messi has been named the top-earning athlete in the world, according to Forbes.

To achieve the feat, Messi topped an all-football including Juventus superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo and Brazilian and PSG star, Neymar Jnr.

With $127m earned last year, Messi takes the top spot as Ronaldo pulled in $109m in second place while Neymar made a total of $105m to finish in the top three.

According to the magazine, it is the first time that the top three spots will be taken by footballers. Also, Messi is the second football figure to top the rankings after his Portugal captain arch rival.

After the three stars in the top three, Manchester United midfielder, Paul Pogba, is the next footballer to place highest on the list. But he had to settle for the 44th spot, yet with his $33m earnings making him the Premier League’s highest earner.

The only other footballer in the top 50 is Barcelona legend, Andres Iniesta (46th), who now plies his trade with Japanese club, Vissel Kobe.

Extravagant boxer, Floyd Mayweather, who topped the rankings last time out, has dropped off the list while Serena Williams is the only woman in the top 100 with $29.2m in earnings.
