Makinde, Oyo APC Trade Words Over Defection Rumour
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has been chastised by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for dismissing rumors that he was planning to defect to the opposition.
Makinde’s spokesperson, Taiwo Adisa, debunked the rumors, saying the APC was only interested in him because of his stellar success in office over the last two years, Eko hot blog gathered.
According to Adisa, the plot to entice Makinde to join the APC was not unexpected.
The APC, on the other hand, called the rejection “shameful, unethical, and regrettable.”
“Gov. Makinde played the ostrich by refusing obvious attempts to enter the APC through the back door,” the APC said in a statement released on Tuesday by the Personal Assistant (Media) to the State Caretaker Chairman, Chief Akin Oke, Olawale Sadare.
“While we appreciate the fact that party politics allows for free entry and exit, we are disappointed that a governor in a state like Oyo can become a desperado in his quest to rule over the entire political room.
“What Gov. Makinde has just done should give genuine democrats and other stakeholders in the nation’s political climate reason to be concerned about the future of democracy and the rule of law.
“According to available evidence, he (Makinde) had formed contacts with a former Niger Delta governor who now resides in Abuja.
“The same former governor also co-opted some powerful APC national gladiators to infiltrate the South West, ostensibly to whittle down the supremacy of others they see as a challenge to their own inordinate ambition ahead of 2023. Gov. Makinde’s overtures were considered and given some backing in principle based on this assumption.

“Even if we accept that Gov. Makinde, like anyone else, has the right to join any political party at any time, we must make it clear that the Oyo APC cannot consider him an asset or a good addition for obvious reasons.
“Virtually all of the gladiators involved in the unfortunate coalition agreement that brought the PDP victory in the 2019 gubernatorial election have now defected to the APC, citing tenable and justifiable reasons centered on insincerity, selfishness, and undemocratic characteristics.

“If anything, the population of those elected on our party’s platform has grown, and more people are flocking to our fold in large numbers. Is it reasonable to expect us to begin courting someone who has been abandoned by 90% of his primary political backers in less than two years in office?
“And, given what has happened to members and supporters of the PDP in the state who had hoped for a reasonable deal in the run-up to the illegal local government election scheduled for May this year, the Makinde political anthill is at risk of further depletion.
“As a result, the truth remains that the Oyo APC does not need a figure like Gov. Makinde, who still has a long way to go if he wants to emerge as a powerful, reliable, and influential political player during and after his four-year tenure.”
