The Niger state government Thursday announced that it will be shutting down all private and secondary schools in the state.

Hannatu Salihu, the state commissioner for education, made announcement during an emergency consultative meeting with the leadership of Association of Proprietors of Private Schools and Association of Model Islamic Schools.

According to Salihu, the schools will be shut between March 12 and will remain closed till March 26.

Recall that the state had initially placed its boarding schools under lock and key following the abduction of schoolchildren at the Government Science College (GSC), Kagara.

Salihu said the two-week closure would give security agencies ample time and opportunity to carry out a comprehensive risk assessment of the schools.

She said the move was sequel to the consensus reached during a meeting with officials from various security agencies in the state.

Niger has suffered coordinated attacks in the hands of bandits with residents being kidnapped for ransom.

Nineteen residents were abducted by bandits on Tuesday during an attack in Kutunku village in Wushishi LGA of the state.
