Nigerians should hold the government responsible for the widespread and perennial insecurity that plagued the country, The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has said.

AYCF National President, Yerima Shettima said this in an interview with the DAILY POST on Sunday.

Shettima said the government has failed in its responsibility to secure the lives and properties of Nigerians.

He said the security agencies are overstretched due to spate of insecurity across, he implores government provide substantial weapons and manpower to the security agencies.

According to the AYCF National President: “The government should be held responsible. It’s the sole responsibility of the government to provide security which is key to the citizens.

“Despite the fact that some of us are aware that the security agencies have been overstretched at one point or the other, we are saying they should consider additional manpower and provide the necessary equipment to encourage these agencies”

Yerima also emphasized the importance intelligence gathering and trust building between communities and security agencies, as crucial to addressing security challenges in the nation.

“We must consider equipping the Nigerian Armed Forces. Intelligence gathering is key, but they need to build trust between them and the communities, so they can get more information about these criminal minded people. These criminal minded people are in the community and some know them very well.”

There has been troubling surge in criminal activities in recent months in the north as banditry and kidnapping becomes order of the day.

Hundreds of schoolchildren have been abducted in schools across the north western region of the country in recent the last four months.
