List Of 5 Important Projects Buhari Should Finish Before Leaving In 2023
- President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration will come to an end in 2023.
- In fact, discussions on who will succeed the Daura-born leader has consistently dominated the media space, though the elections are still relatively far away.
Before President Buhari hands over in 2023, there are some important projects he should make sure are completed.
This will not only improve the nation’s economy and the welfare of Nigerians but also serve as good campaign materials for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general elections.
(1.) Second Niger Bridge
Though the concept preceded his administration, President Buhari has shown commitment to ensuring the Second Niger Bridge becomes a reality.
With the southeast always accusing him of marginalization, ensuring the project completes before he leaves office will undoubtedly earn him some love from the Igbo region.
The project will enhance the southeast’s economy and improve the APC’s winning chances in the next polls.
(2.) Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
The Lagos–Ibadan Expressway connects Nigeria’s economic nerve centre, Lagos, to Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.
The reconstruction of the expressway, started in 2013. Several years later, it is still under construction.
However, President Buhari has added the project into one of its legacy projects and listed it among those that will be funded by the loots recovered from former military leader, Sani Abacha, and former Delta governor, James Ibori.
The expressway is allegedly the busiest interstate route in Nigeria as it is also the major route to the northern, southern and eastern parts of Nigeria.
(3.) Port Harcourt-Maiduguri Railway Project
President Buhari recently launched the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri railway rehabilitation project.
The railway links major cities as it starts from Port Harcourt in the south-south and ends in Maiduguri in the northeast. The project is estimated to cost $3.2 billion
(4.) The East-West Road
The East-West Road is a very important project due to its economic significance. The road links the Niger Delta states from Benin to Oron in Akwa Ibom State through Calabar, the Cross River State capital.
Though it is being handled by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the president should make sure the project is completed before leaving in 2023.
(5.) Siemens’ $2 billion power deal
Nigeria has a perennial power problem which has defied solutions over the years. In an attempt to solve the problem from a new approach, President Buhari entered into a $2 billion power deal with the German company, Siemens.
The project’s goal is to expand Nigeria’s electricity capacity to 25,000MW from the current average of around 4,500MW by 2025.
However, the project has been divided into phases. President should ensure that all the phases that are supposed to be covered before 2023 are covered.
Also, before leaving in 2023, the president should put in place mechanisms to ensure the project succeeds fully by 2025 as scheduled.
