PHOTOS: Five Tragedies That Changed Football History

  • Many instances recorded in history saw many footballers succumb to tragedies caused by plane crashes among other accidents
  • The following are some of these instances that changed football history forever.

As gathered by  EKO HOT BLOG, these tragedies have since resulted to serious reformations in the football world, right from security to the structure of stadiums.

Chapecoense Tragedy

In 2017, Lamia flight 2933 was shipping Chapecoense team to play in the final of the South American cup, but the team never made it.

The plane crashed midway onto a Columbian mountain, only 6 out of 77 passengers in the plane survived the fatal tragedy.

The entire football world mourned and the South American Cup was consequently awarded to the club.

Munich Air Disaster

Such a tragedy had not hit the squad since 1958 when Manchester United were returning to England from Belgrade.

United had advanced to the semifinals of an European Cup and the plane had to refuel in Munich.

The airport runway was covered in slash which provoked the whole accident on take off, 23 lives were lost including 8 Manchester players.

Port Said Massacre

Football in Egypt has seen extreme cases of violence by the armed forces, such was the case in 2012 in one of their local matches.

War sparked between rival fans who viciously attacked each other.

The armed forces refused to open the gate to let the fans out of the stadium, this resulted to death of 72 fans. The domestic league was consequently banned for two years.

Heysel Tragedy

The 1985 European Cup Final between Liverpool and Juventus turned into a tragedy before kick off.

Liverpool fans attacked Juventus supporters resulting in 39 deaths, the final was however played despite this. Liverpool was consequently banned in the European Cup for six years.

Dangerous Stadiums

Bastia received Marseille for a French Semi Final in 1992, a temporary stand was added to the stadium for the match but it collapsed before the match killing 18 and injuring over 2000.

Another Bradford Stadium which was made of wooden stands was once a death trap too, in a third division match, a small fire began in the stands and in less than five minutes it engulfed the whole stadium. 56 died and over 200 were injured.
