Why APC May Lose 2023 Election – PGF chief
- “As much as it is a welcome development that the party is winning new members, there must be corresponding effort to regulate the conduct of party leaders, based on which efforts are made to provide new orientation to all party leaders, especially the newcomers.
Salihu Lukman, the Director-General of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, said on Monday that the All Progressives Congress (APC) faces a significant challenge in maintaining President Muhammadu Buhari’s electoral advantages in 2023.
He also warned APC members not to put their confidence in any of the party’s leaders “blindly” ahead of the 2023 election.
The PGF chief said in a statement titled “Determining Factors for 2023 Contests in APC: Internal Contest and Inconvenient Truth” that the ruling party’s strongest opponent was within its ranks, and that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was merely a shadow opposition whose electoral prospects were dependent on the outcome of internal APC contests.
Lukman also blamed sabotage by party leaders in the affected states for the APC’s failure in some governorship elections in 2019.

“Given that the APC has become the go-to party in Nigerian politics, the need to control party leaders’ behavior is paramount,” he said. The APC’s vision of becoming a genuinely democratic party would be jeopardized if it is unable to build the capacity to control the actions of its leaders.
“There is also a need to appeal to party leaders to rise above the narrow mentality of relating to problems based on estimations of support or opposition for party leaders’ goals, in addition to the need to control the behavior of political leaders.
“Once political leaders are willing to estimate support for their goals, they must have blind faith in all party members and the decisions they make, even though those decisions are incorrect and violate the party’s constitution.”
