PHOTO: Everything You Need To Know About Sophia, The World’s First Humanoid Robot Citizen
- Emerging technologies like industrial robots, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, are advancing at a rapid pace.
- These developments can improve the speed, quality, and cost of goods and services, but they can also displace large numbers of workers.
Sophia, a result of advancement in artificial intelligence is an advanced humanoid robot developed by the Hong Kong based company Hanson Robotics and created by Dr David Hanson, a 2007 PhD graduate from the University of Texas.
Sophia has a female face with life-like facial expressions that can display emotions. Her skin is surprisingly lifelike, using a material called “frubber” that lets her blink, move her mouth and turn her head relatively naturally.
She is modelled after actress Audrey Hepburn. Sophia speaks English, makes jokes and you could have a reasonably intelligent conversation with Sophia.

Over the past years, Sophia, currently in its 13th version, has become a media darling, participating in various TV interviews, performing in a concert, and even making an appearance at a United Nations meeting on artificial intelligence and sustainable development.
Currently, she has become the first robot to be granted citizenship by Saudi Arabia, making the Kingdom the first country in the world to offer such a status to a machine, EKO HOT BLOG gathered.
With a more human-like form, Hanson hopes that eventually Sophia will have applications in fields like medical therapy and could work alongside humans in factory situations.
Over the past few years, however, technology gurus like Elon Musk and the rest have raised their concerns about Sophia and have described artificial intelligence as the greatest risk we face. However, they called for governmental intervention to ensure that the technology’s development is carefully regulated.
