Nigeria and Cameroon will renew their perennial rivalry at the Africa Nations Cup this weekend after it emerged the Super Eagles will face the Indomitable Lions in the round of 16.

Having qualified following consecutive 1-0 wins over Burundi and Guinea, the Super Eagles ended the group phase terribly, stunned 2-0 by debutants, Madagascar, who also topped the group via that victory.

Having finished in second place, Gernot Rohr’s face Group F runners-up as Cameroon could only end with a goalless draw in their final group match against Benin Republic on Tuesday.

The match, billed for Saturday, July 6, is the latest installment of a rivalry that started decades ago. Although the Super Eagles beat Cameroon en route to qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the Lions have a better record against at AFCON.

In their last AFCON encounter, Nigeria defeated Cameroon 2-1, with Jay-Jay Okocha and John Utaka providing the goals at the 2004 edition staged in Tunisia.

Now coached by the duo of Clarence Seedorf and Patrick Kluivert, Cameroon, who have five AFCON titles compared to Nigeria’s three, are the defending champions.
