The United States District Court for the Western District of Washington at Tacoma, on Tuesday, gave an order that Abidemi Rufai should remain in detention.

Rufai, who is an aide to Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, is currently being fingered for a $350,000 COVID-19 unemployment fraud in the United States, an allegation his lawyer said he has denied any involvement.

His bail was denied following a move by the government for “a stay of the release order.”

The United States District Judge, Benjamin Settle, has however, granted the government’s motion to halt Rufai’s release.

“The release order is stayed, and the defendant shall remain in custody pending this Court’s decision on the government’s motion for review,” the court document read.

Eko Hot Blog recalls that the United States Department of Justice had earlier raised an alarm, saying Rufai is a flight risk and should not be granted bail owing to his ties with the Nigerian government.

The DoJ also claimed that the surety provided by Rufai is a suspected fraudster.
