Taraba University Set To Expel 2,000 Students Over Examination Fraud

The Taraba State University, Jalingo is reportedly set to expel no fewer than 2,000 students and some staff for alleged involvement in examination malpractice, misconduct and upgrading of students’ results.

A source who is a member of the Senate committee disclosed that the Senate committee have concluded plans to expel the students and some of the staffs for upgrading the Grade Point Average (GPA) of the students and collecting a sum for it.

The source said that the students who are mostly final year students (400 and 500 level) upgraded their grades to first class and others who were supposed to spill over also paid their way out to some of the staffs.

He added that even 100 level students were involved in the fraud just to escape probation.

“The university management heard of the illegal activities going on, bothered by the ugly  situation, they summoned the head of the ICT unit of the school and he denied having knowledge of the act”

“Upon thorough investigation, it was discovered that some of the staffs working under him are responsible for this irresponsible act”

“Some of the affected students were said to be involved in leaking examination questions and giving it out to their fellow students”

“Most of the staffs involved are staffs of the varsity’s Information and communications technology (ICT) unit; who are responsible for uploading results on the school portal, and also course lecturers and a few head of departments whose jobs are at stake”.

A senior lecturer who spoke under condition of anonymity said, “Well, I’m not aware of that. The only thing I know is that the results portal was locked immediately after the last senate approval of results. However, I do not know the reason behind that decision because it has not been done this way before”.

It was gathered that some of the ICT staffs collect at least ₦5,000 and up to ₦10,000 to clear a failed course.

However, the University authorities are yet to issue a formal statement on the issue.
