JUST IN: Lawyer Gives Update On Sunday Igboho’s Trial In Benin Republic
- One of the lawyers of Sunday Igboho has given an update on his trial in the Benin Republic.
EKOHOTBLOG reports that Olusegun Falola, one of the lawyers of embattled Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo well known as Sunday Igboho, has said that his client may not return to Nigeria in a long time after his release in the Benin Republic.
Falola made this known in an interview with FeelrightnewsTV on Monday.
Recalls that the 48-year-old activist and his wife were arrested on Monday, July 19, 2021, by the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, the Benin Republic while attempting to flee to Germany.
Sunday Igboho’s wife, Ropo, was released after the court found out that she had not committed any offence.
On his part, the embattled Yoruba Nation agitator was returned to the custody of Brigade Criminelle in Cotonou, Benin Republic.
This came after the Beninese court ordered that Sunday Igboho be remanded in a prison facility in the Francophone West African nation while further investigations were carried out on the case against the agitator.
The Yoruba rights activist, who is now seeking asylum in the Benin Republic, is facing allegations bordering on trafficking in arms, inciting violence and causing disunity in Nigeria.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that some of the other offences said to have been committed by the activist bordered on illegal migration, dubious connivance with immigration officers, and an attempt to cause civil unrest.
Though currently in detention, the court granted Sunday Igboho access to medical care while his lawyers continue to battle for his release and kick against his extradition to Nigeria.
However, the lawyer of the Yoruba Nation agitator, in an interview on Monday, said it would be a dangerous decision for Igboho to return when he regains freedom from the Benin Republic, adding that his life is under threat in Nigeria.
Falola said, “When I arrived from Paris at the custody where Igboho was detained, he was first chained. They were scared that he could just disappear into the thin air because of his mystical powers.
“The police told me that if Igboho’s chains were untied and he escapes mysteriously, he (police officer) will be stripped of his rank and also dismissed.

“The police officer said he was told that Igboho could disappear or turn into a cat, and many other things were said to the police officers which made them tie him,” he lawyer disclosed.
Falola further revealed that it took his timely intervention for the officers to unchain Igboho and allow him walk freely, stressing that the Yoruba Nation agitator did not commit any offence but he is just a human rights activist.
While giving an update on Sunday Igboho’s case, the lawyer added that he is safe in the Benin Republic, saying, “The case will make revelations as to which government is powerful in Africa, our government may not be wealthy, and not much in population as compared to Nigeria but there is a signed treaty that must be respected.
“Igboho cannot be left to return back to Nigeria for now because of the destruction of his properties that was witnessed, they are not looking for Sunday Igboho alone but planning to kill him.
“They are looking for how to kill him and that’s very dangerous to allow him return back to Nigeria. So he is being kept safe in custody,” Falola said.
The lawyer further noted that Sunday Igboho may proceed to Germany to see his children and family when he regains freedom.
