Students and others on Monday fled as gunmen enforced sit-at-home order in Imo State.

EKOHOTBLOG reports that there was pandemonium in Owerri, the Imo State capital on Monday as unknown gunmen suspected to be members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) enforced the sit-at-home order in the state.

It was gathered that the assailants, who stormed streets and markets in the state capital, forced traders to close shops.

It was further learnt that the gunmen shot sporadically in the air to disperse people and motorists.

The people were thrown into panic as they scampered for safety over fear of being attacked by the gunmen.

The incident, which started at Wethral Road, spread to neighbouring Mbaise Road, Douglas Road and Naze along Aba- Owerri Road.

Traders at the multi-million Alaba International market and Naze Cluster markets, it was learnt, closed their shops and locked the entrances leading to the market.

It was gathered that hoodlums took advantage of the situation to scatter some wares already displayed by shop owners who fled just as schools immediately closed while parents rushed to pick their children.

Meanwhile, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Mike Abattam, could not be reached for comment as of press time.

EKOHOTBLOG reports that the South-East region has been thrown into apprehension since IPOB declared its weekly sit-at-home order.

Although spokesman of the group, Emma Powerful, had said IPOB had cancelled the weekly order, some members of the group were said to have vowed to continue to enforce it.
