EKO HOT BLOG reports that as the battle for 2023 Assembly elections in Lagos State has begun to unfold, one of the bigwig in the Epe political arena, Hon. Segun Agbaje has declared intention to run for the State assembly under the Epe Constituency 1.

Hon Segun Agbaje, former Executive Chairman, Epe Local Government.

The former Local Government Chairman of Epe said his decision to run for the position is hinged on the irresistible clarion call from his people.

Hon Agbaje disclosed this in an exclusive interview with EKO HOT BLOG.

Agbaje who unveiled his plans for the people of Epe recounted his feats during his tenure as Chairman Epe LGA.

According to him, he built and rehabilitated more schools in various locations across the LGA, constructed drainages, culverts and established tye fish farming vocation in the agricultural sector..

His administration constructed and upgraded the Primary Health Care centres and provision of adequate security through the local IBILE vigilantes.

He also facilitated the establishment of a historic community participation forum into peace and security committees with monthly allowances, the provision of wooden jetties, bored holes water supply at the riverine areas, the empowerment of market men and women and also riverine dwellers with fishing materials, the upgrading of major markets, the creation of jobs for 467 non-pensionable staff and permanent employment of 216 pensionable staff amongst others.

Hon Segun Agbaje assured that he has what it takes to build an enviable community where citizens would enjoy the dividends of democracy through an all-inclusive government.

He said he has a better understanding of the community since he resides in the midst of his people.

“I am one of the past Administrators that have consistently sponsored sports in Epe through the Iderade Ramadan Football Competition across Epe, Eredo and Agbowa up to the 14th Edition with an Opel Astra car as the winning prize, which provides commercial gains to the champions for public transportation. This has over the years produced U17 players, it has also produced talented footballers for trials at football academies and Boxing,” he said.

He emphasised that there is no other time than now to have a paradigm shift in the business of Lawmaking in Epe and further cement the growing advancement of the town.

“Yes, we have projects facilitated by our representative, but which particular law is significant towards the development of Epe? Yes, we must have roads; the Executive must provide electricity, schools, health care, empowerment and every other thing. But when you look at Epe, God has blessed us with land and water. Let me have one law that has to do with agriculture that has now empowered the people of Epe in that area.

“The key laws that have to do with our own constituents, we need to know. Epe should have been by now, the full food basket of Lagos State and Nigeria, we have those resources and manpower but what are we doing? Why can’t we have a sports village in Epe? This is a conducive atmosphere for sports where sportsmen and women can have an uninterrupted focus which would bring out the best for world-class competition. There are certain things we need to open to the larger society,” he stated.

Hon Agbaje, however, said that it is high time another hand like him is brought in to envision other areas that the government’s attention can be directed to improve the community in such a sector, he assured that his would be a different approach entirely, using the risk of youth unemployment as a yardstick.

“Let me tell you, we cannot get a government job for all the youths in Epe. We have land and water, why can’t we engage people in fish farming? Why can’t we have a kind of partnership that will involve more fish farming businesses? We can partner with Agro-allied organisations.

“The issue now is not about working at Alausa, Primary Healthcare Center or Education District III or the Local Government. We will look around us and create that opening so that the youths can have the opportunity in Epe because we’ve been unable to effectively engage them. The difference is that I’m going to engage them to have opportunities. We have good boxers in Epe but they are not exposed to the State. That is another area that they can develop and make a living in and even support others. In those days, we have best swimmers from Epe but that is no more.

“There will be a crime-free environment if the youths are engaged. Oftentimes, the trend tilts towards teachers’ recruitment, what about those that are not graduates? I’ll ensure that they remain on that trade (vocational training), a platform that assures return on investment,” he said.

Agbaje said his ambition to lead his constituents come 2023 is in no way an indication that he is at loggerhead with the incumbent as he enjoys a cordial relationship with him.

He however pleaded that youths must be encouraged to support whoever they chose rather than victimizing them and depriving them of their means of livelihood.

“He is my brother, I am aspiring. Let me tell you, we have a cordial relationship, he’s my brother, we don’t have any quarrel, it is only on the political seat and we should caution our supporters. He is going to support me and we are going to work together. And I am going to wish him a bigger position than the House of Assembly like a Minister, an Ambassador and others. However, our youths must be given the free will to associate with the candidate of their choice without being victimised, as change agents, we must practise what we preach,” he stated.
