It comes after 88,736 new infections were reported on Thursday, the previous highest daily total since the start of the pandemic.
On Friday, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) recorded an additional 3,201 confirmed cases of Omicron, bringing the total recorded cases of the new variant in the UK to 14,909.
However given that these are only identified through sequencing a fraction of cases, the real total is likely to be higher.
New analysis has revealed that cases of the Omicron variant are doubling every one and a half days in some areas of England, including London, the West Midlands, Yorkshire and Humberside and the north east.
Boris Johnson said Omicron was “a very serious threat to us now” as he visited a vaccination centre in Hillingdon, west London, on Friday, and called on people to get their booster jabs.
“We are seeing a considerable wave coming through and people have got to be prepared and they have got to understand what it entails,” he said.
The Government has said it would provide a booster jab to everyone who wants one by the end of December.
But with millions of people expected to contract the virus by Christmas Day, officials have admitted this target will not be met, as those who test positive will have to delay their booster.
