When Burna boy and Wizkid won various awards in the last edition of the Grammy awards held early last year, a lot of Nigerians were happy and proud of Nigerian music. Not being the first time Burna Boy would be nominated for the Grammy awards, his success story, especially on the night, was a culmination of the ups and downs he had experienced in his career so far. The award was not only for him, it was also for a lot of Nigerians, who had waited so long to see a Nigerian based musical artist clinch one of the most glamorous entertainment awards in the world.
However, less than one year after the Grammy awards success, Nigeria music took centre stage again towards the end of last year, when the Grammy Awards released the list of the artists who were nominated for the awards, initially slated to hold on Monday, January 31 2022. Not less than five talented Nigerian based musicians were nominated for the prestigious award, yet again. In Burna Boy, Wizkid, Femi Kuti, Made Kuti and Tems, Nigeria had hopes of clinching yet more international awards, this year.
Beyond the excitement and funfare associated with clinching the Grammy’s, what does another Grammy nomination mean for Nigeria entertainment and Nigerians as a whole?
In a year where things had not gone smoothly for Nigeria econimically, clinching another series of nominations for the Grammy, may just have been the only thing to have put a smile on a lot of Nigerians’ faces, who had probably been looking for any form of good news last year, to keep their mental and emotional health intact. There was a period in Nigeria where sports, especially football used to help relax the minds of Nigerians, but in recent times, even football has not done enough to make Nigerians happy. So, for the music and entertainment industry to give Nigerians something to smile about last year, meant a lot.
