EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has rejected claims by some highly placed individuals and groups in Nigeria saying that terrorists could overrun the country by 2023.

In a statement signed by Niyi Akinsiju, the group’s chairman, and Cassidy Madueke, the group’s secretary, the group argued that accusations of a worsening security situation were not entirely accurate.

“We, at BMO, recognize that the country is now facing significant security issues, but it is a disservice to the security authorities to claim that criminals have gained the upper hand to the point where they will be able to take over the country by 2023.”

“What we find most aggravating is the impression given by religious and socio-cultural authorities that little or no effort is being taken to combat terrorist activity.

“Considering how the country has fared recently in the war against insurgency after several years of suicide bombings and huge deaths in key cities across Northern Nigeria, this is not only untrue but also misleading.”

“To minimize any misunderstanding, a total of 47,975 terrorists and their families have surrendered to soldiers in the region since September 2021.”

“This comes on top of decimating militants and confining them to the outskirts of Lake Chad and the Mandara hills, as well as multiple terrorist convictions by a special court.”

“In the North West, where the country is seeing a new wave of terrorism, the military has been conducting air and ground operations against bandits and other criminal elements, despite the fact that more has to be done,” the statement continued.

BMO also refuted statements made by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) that elections will be impossible to hold next year due to security concerns.

“We consider it as scaremongering,” it added, “particularly given that the country has faced worse situations in the past, yet elections were held.”

“We also witnessed how the country’s security agencies ensured that the Anambra gubernatorial election was free and fair.”

“So we have a government in place at the centre which has the capacity to not only stem the tide of insecurity in the North West but also prove naysayers wrong about the 2023 election.

“We make the bold claim that, just as they did in the North-East, the military will annihilate terrorist groups in the Zamfara and Kaduna axis and other regions of the country under President Muhammadu Buhari’s watch.”
