1. New York subway attack suspect faces terrorism charge

A 62-year-old man accused of shooting 10 people on the New York subway was taken into custody Wednesday and faces a federal terror charge, following a day-long manhunt in a city set on edge by the attack.

Frank James — who is suspected of detonating two smoke canisters as the train pulled into a Brooklyn station, before firing into the crowd — was stopped by officers on a Manhattan street, and arrested without incident.

“My fellow New Yorkers, we got him,” Mayor Eric Adams told a news conference.

“There was nowhere left for him to run,” added New York Police Department commissioner Keechant Sewell, whose officers made the arrest acting on a tip.

2. Osinbajo advocates climate justice, more energy for Africa

Ahead of the next conference on Climate Change scheduled for Egypt, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has advocated climate justice for Africa, noting that a just transition would mean more energy and must include ending global energy poverty.

Osinbajo stated this at a virtual event on climate finance with the theme, ‘Climate Finance and a Just, Equitable Energy Transition for Africa’, organised by The Atlantic Council.

The Atlantic Council is a nonpartisan organization that galvanizes US leadership and engagement in the world, in partnership with allies and partners, to shape solutions to global challenges.

According to a statement by his spokesman, Laolu Akande, the VP said, “We are already seeing the investment rules limit the technology choices of African countries in ways that do not apply to wealthy nations. Applying a set of standards to Africa that you can’t apply in your own country is the opposite of climate justice.”

3. Osinachi’s husband is married to another woman –Minister

Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen, says Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of the late popular gospel artiste, Osinachi Nwachukwu, is married to another woman.

She spoke on Wednesday while she featured as a guest on NTA’s Good Morning Nigeria’s breakfast show monitored by The PUNCH.

According to the minister, Peter, who is now in police custody, physically assaulted his late wife and her four children.

Tallen noted that the children of the deceased opened up to her when she visited the Abuja residence of the late singer this week

4. Sunday Dare tips Chukwueze’s Villarreal to win Champions League

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, has tipped Samuel Chukwueze’s Villarreal to win the 2022 UEFA Champions League.

He said he was supporting the club as Chukwueze is the only Nigerian youth left in the competition.

Chukwueze’s goal on Tuesday night qualified Villarreal for the Semifinals of the competition.

According to a statement by the Ministry’s Press and Public Relations Officer, Mohammed Manga, Dare stated this while receiving the UEFA Champions League trophy in Abuja.

5. Under my administration, Rivers State will open its books for EFCC’s scrutiny — Dagogo

Rivers State governorship aspirant, Hon. Doctor Farah Dagogo had said that if elected into office in 2023, his administration will run on the pedestal of accountability and transparency.

He said that the openness will be such that the government financial records will be made available for the scrutiny of anti-graft agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Dagogo who is currently the Member representing Degema/ Bonny Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives gave the assurance shortly after submitting his expression of interest and nomination forms at the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, headquarters in Abuja.

6. Call for Buhari’s resignation: Presidency replies Northern Elders Forum

The Presidency also said that it was not ready to be drawn into the high-decibel show in the media, taking the nation by the storm from the Northern Elders Forum.

The Presidency’s statement came on the heels of the calls by the Northern Elders Forum that President Muhammadu Buhari should resign as a result of the worsening security situation in the country.

7. Senate to Pass Buhari’s revised 2022 fiscal framework Thursday

THE Senate will today,  Thursday, pass the revised 2022 fiscal framework before adjourning on the Easter break.

This was disclosed yesterday by the President of the Senate, Senator  Ahmad Lawan, after the report of the Committee on Finance was stepped down yesterday  for consideration.

The Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi, APC, Kebbi North who moved a motion for the report to be stepped down, explained that its deferred consideration till tomorrow, Thursday, April 14, 2022, would allow lawmakers make their inputs.

8. 2022: US Govt to partner Osun for credible poll

Government of United States of America on Wednesday said it will partner with Osun State Government to deliver credible election during the 2022 guber poll slated for July 16.

The US government delegates led by it Embassy’s Political and Economic Chief, Mr Brandon Hudspeth, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to Governor Oyetola at Exco lounge, Governor’s Office, Abere.

He also  informed the governor that they will be meeting  stakeholders in state ahead of the poll

9. Gunmen kill Ebonyi businessman one week to wedding

Gunmen have killed an Ebonyi- based businessman, Issac Nnaemeka Chukwu, a week to his wedding.

Chukwu, who sold provisions, was killed by suspected assassins in Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi state on Monday night.

The deceased, popularly known as Ochudo, hailed from Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

He had concluded arrangements for his wedding to his fiance, Favour Chioma, who was with him when the gunmen and killed him.

10. Man City qualify for UCL semi-finals

13. Kaduna most hit as attacks on power plants, rail, airports peak

Power and rail infrastructure are the most attacked assets in Nigeria in the last three years. This was disclosed in a report by a socioeconomic research firm, SBM intelligence, yesterday, titled: ‘Attacks on infrastructure in Nigeria.’

According to the report, an overwhelming majority of attacks on infrastructural installations since 2019 by non-state actors occurred in the North.

The report comes as the Federal Government blamed last weekend’s national grid collapse on an act of vandalism on a transmission tower on the Odukpani-Ikot Ekpene 330KV double circuit transmission.

The research firm identified 25 attacks on infrastructure in the country between May 2019 and March 2022 across the country, which listed 19 of the attacks in the North and six in the South.

14. Vehicle importers kick as Customs implements ECOWAS common tariffs

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has commenced the implementation of the new version of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Common External Tariff, (CET) 2022-2026 on imported vehicles.

According to the NCS, the migration from the old CET (2017-2021) to the new version, which is in line with the World Customs Organisation (WCO), takes immediate effect.

In a statement, yesterday, the Customs spokesman, Timi Bomodi, said the new rates apply to both new and used vehicles imported into the country. New and used vehicles are subjected to a National Automotive Council (NAC) levy of 20 and 15 per cent respectively.

15. Again, Northern elders ask Buhari to resign over insecurity

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has demanded the immediate resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari, over killings across the country, especially in the North. The Director, Publicity and Advocacy of NEF, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, made the call yesterday in a statement.

The group said: “The administration of President Buhari does not appear to have answers to the challenges of security to which we are exposed. We cannot continue to live and die under the dictates of killers, kidnappers, rapists and sundry criminal groups that have deprived us of our rights to live in peace and security.

“Our Constitution has provisions for leaders to voluntarily step down if they are challenged by personal reasons or they prove incapable of leading.

“It is now time for President Buhari to seriously consider that option, since his leadership has proved spectacularly incapable of providing security for Nigerians. Our Forum is aware of the weight of this advice, and it is also aware that we cannot continue to live under these conditions until 2023 when President Buhari’s term ends,” it said.

16. 2023 intrigues: Osinbajo woos APC lawmakers as Adamu, Kyari stand down

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will, today, meet with All Progressives Congress (APC) members in the House of Representatives to officially inform them of his decision to contest the presidency.

This was contained in a letter he wrote to the chamber, read by Deputy Speaker, Idris Wase.

The Vice President had, yesterday, invited members of the APC Senate caucus to an iftar dinner, held at Aguda House, Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja.

THIS was as APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, formerly tendered his resignation letter as the senator representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District.

Also, the newly elected Deputy National Chairman (North), Abubakar Kyari, also resigned as the lawmaker representing Borno North District.
