Newspaper Headlines

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Major Newspapers in Nigeria

Punch Newspaper

1. Olukoyi: Osun govt condoles with late monarch’s family

The Osun State Government has commiserated with the family of Olukoyi of Ikoyi in Isokan South Local Council Development Authority, Oba Oyetunji Otunla, who died on Tuesday.

The PUNCH reports that the monarch ascended the throne in 1987 and reigned for 35 years. He died after a brief illness.

The Osun state Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Funke Egbemode, in a statement on Tuesday, said the monarch joined his ancestors at the age of 75.

2. Netflix shares plunge as subscribers drop

Netflix shares lost a quarter of their value Tuesday after the company revealed its ranks of subscribers shrank in the first quarter of this year.

It was the first time in a decade that the leading streaming television service had lost subscribers. The company blamed the quarter-over-quarter erosion on the suspension of its service in Russia due to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Netflix ended the first quarter of this year with 221.6 million subscribers, slightly less than the final quarter of last year.

The Silicon Valley tech firm reported a net income of $1.6 billion in the recently ended quarter, compared to $1.7 billion in the same period a year earlier. Netflix shares were down some 25 percent to $262 in after-market trades that followed release of the earnings figures.

3. Liverpool thrash Man United 4-0 to go top of Premier League

Liverpool embarrassed Manchester United for the second time this season to move top of the Premier League as Mohamed Salah struck twice in a 4-0 thrashing on Tuesday.

Jurgen Klopp’s men won 5-0 at Old Trafford in October and expectations of a similar rout were well-founded as Liverpool exposed the massive gulf between the sides with Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane also on target.

Liverpool move two points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the table, but still need the English champions to slip up in their remaining seven league games of the season to win the title.

In contrast to the fine margins separating Liverpool and City, a 22-point gap now lies between the league leaders and United in sixth with only Tottenham and Arsenal’s own failings keeping the Red Devils in the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

4. Fulham promoted to Premier League after Preston win

Fulham were promoted back to the Premier League on Tuesday with four games to spare as Aleksandar Mitrovic scored twice in a 3-0 win over Preston at Craven Cottage.

It is the fifth consecutive season the Cottagers have changed divisions as they were also promoted in 2018 and 2020 before being relegated in their first season back in the top flight.

However, in contrast to their need to go via the playoffs two years ago, Marco Silva’s men have been the best side in the Championship by a distance this season.

Mitrovic has been the major reason why and the Serb took his tally to an incredible 40 goals in 40 league games this season with a first-half double.

7. Liverpool score four to dent Man Utd’s top-four hopes

Mohamed Salah scored twice as Liverpool beat Manchester United 4-0, ending the day top of the table for the first time since 1 October and denting their visitors’ top-four hopes.

Luis Diaz swept home the opener in the fifth minute from a low cross by Salah, who doubled the lead midway through the first half, finishing off a superb team move.

Man Utd improved after the break and Alisson was forced to make a double save.

It proved to be a key moment because Liverpool stepped up their game again and Mane hit the third in the 68th minute with a clinical finish from Diaz’s cross.

8. Imo SDP members exchange blows over-sharing positions in Congress

Owerri- Members of the Imo state Social Democratic Party, SDP, on Tuesday exchanged blows as well as destroyed some of their properties in Owerri, after accusing the national executive of the party, of allegedly planning to conduct a one-sided congress to favour a group of people in the SDP.

The Acting Imo State Chairman, of the SDP, Mr Ben Anochie, who confirmed this to Vanguard in Owerri, also said the congress could not hold because of the battle among members of the party.

He told Vanguard, “The problem is that the main structure of the SDP which has been in existence for almost a decade felt that the National body that came to organise for the congress has sold out. Out of the 34 positions they only gave four positions to the main structure of the SDP, including the secretary position so they got angry and said that it will not happen. The Congress did not hold.

13. Soyinka Describes Buhari’s Pardon Of Dariye, Nyame, As Squashed Egg Against Nigerian Faces

Nobel laurate, Prof Wole Soyinka has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s pardon granted ex-governors of Plateau State, Senator Joshua Dariye; and Taraba State, Rev. Jolly Nyame as a  squashed putrid egg against Nigerian faces that Nigerians will not forget in a hurry.

Soyinka’s reaction came in a statement on Tuesday titled, “A putrid presidential Easter egg,’’ as he added his voice to the Easter message by Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto.

He said in the statement: “Easter Greetings to you, Rev Mathew Kukah and to all your followers. All has been said, I think. I am impelled however not to miss an opportunity to add my own Easter drop to the overflowing vessel of pietistic sentiments if only to reassure Christians – and also moslems in turn — that even we, non-believers, do partake of that same ethical communion to which most humanity aspire.

“Also, your Easter sermon opens up yet again those sluices of juridical hypocrisy to which we dare not cease to draw attention.

14. Delta Attorney-General Decries Frequent Application For Withdrawal Of Rape Cases

Delta State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Isaiah Bozimo Esq, has decried the rate parents of rape victims flood his office with applications for withdrawal of such cases.

He said the most worrisome aspect was that those committing the act were on the increase, wondering how such a crime can be nipped in the bud if parents of victims who are supposed to be on the same page with prosecuting authorities continue to display a nonchalant attitude towards a grievous crime as rape.

Bozimo, however, resolved that the ministry will continue to pursue such cases to their logical conclusions so long there are strong evidence to do so; advising victims or their parents to come forward whenever such happens.
