EKO HOT BLOG reports that Rt. Rev. Olubunmi Akinlade, Bishop of the Diocese of Ife, has advised the Federal Government to reduce the cost of governance and plug other channels through which the country’s resources are being wasted.
Akinlade told journalists in Ibadan, Oyo State’s capital, on Tuesday, ahead of the diocese’s synod, that Nigeria desperately needed visionary and selfless leadership to bring about the kind of change that the people desired.
The bishop also requested that the government refrain from borrowing to pay political office holders and other wasteful endeavors.
According to the clergy, the theme of the second Synod, which will take place from April 30 to May 1, 2022, is “the grace of giving.”
The bishop condemned ritual killings, internet fraud, and other criminal activities, which he claimed caused a slew of problems in the country.
Akinlade praised the Federal Government for its successes in combating insurgency but urged that efforts be stepped up.
“Government should improve the general living conditions of the population by reducing waste and the cost of governance,” he said. Such savings should be used to improve infrastructure and create jobs.
Borrowing to support political appointees and pay redundant employees should be discouraged as well.
“Small and medium-sized industries, local manufacturing, and agro-business should be encouraged and empowered to help grow the economy and reduce our reliance on imported goods.”

The cleric stated that if the government took the recommended steps, backed up by long-term policies, the country’s demand for foreign exchange would be drastically reduced while the value of the Naira would increase.
“Every individual must engage in a national rethink, reorientation, and rebirth.” This can be driven by visionary and selfless leadership that can foster such a shift. The decreasing emphasis on morality, integrity, and forthrightness, particularly among youth, is concerning.”
