1. Makinde appoints new permanent secretaries, tutors-general, others

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has approved the appointments of a new set of Permanent Secretaries, Inspectors-General of Education, Tutors-General and the Surveyor-General for the state.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Taiwo Adisa, announced this on Sunday.

He said the list contained seven permanent secretaries, 10 Inspectors-General of Education, 10 tutors-general and the surveyor-general of the state.

The governor, according to Adisa, said a date would be announced for the inauguration of the newly promoted officers.

According to the statement, the approval followed a thorough process, which included written and oral examinations.

2. Soyinka meets Igboho in Benin Republic

Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka has met with Yoruba Nation campaigner, Sunday Adeyemo also known as Sunday Ighoho, The PUNCH has learnt.

Also at the meeting include Yoruba Nation arrowhead and leader of the Umbrella body of Yoruba Self-determination Groups, Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, Banji Akintoye.

Our correspondent learnt that the meeting took place on Sunday in neighbouring Benin Republic where Igboho is being restricted to after his bail on medical ground.

The details of the Sunday meeting were, however, sketchy as of press time.

Akintoye had on March 7, 2022, announced the release of Ighoho in the neighbouring Francophone country.

Declared wanted by the Department of State Services for allegedly stockpiling arms to destabilise Nigeria, an allegation he denied, Igboho had fled his Ibadan residence and escaped to Benin Republic in July 2021.

Luck ran out on him and he was arrested by the Interpol at a Benin airport on July 19, 2021 when he tried to board a Germany-bound flight.

3. Anambra PDP aspirants hold panel members hostage, party suspends congress

The five-member Anambra State Ward Congress panel of the Peoples Democratic Party, led by Jibrin Ahmed, was, on Sunday, held hostage by the party’s aspirants and stakeholders over its inability to present the original results sheets.

The scenario almost resulted into a free-for-all at the party’s Secretariat at Udoka Estate, when the panel members claimed they left the original results sheets at their hotel room.

The panel members had directed the aspirants, who were contesting the National Assembly elections, and others to converge on the party’s office for briefing before the ward congress, but trouble started when they presented the photocopies of the results sheets.

The development did not go down well with the stakeholders, who insisted that they must bring the original results sheets, adding that this had been the style of the party.

4. Labour urges FG to scrap, reverse electricity privatisation exercise

Organised Labour in Nigeria has urged the Federal Government to scrap and reverse the electricity privatisation exercise in the country.

Mr Ayuba Wabba, President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), made the call during the 2022 International Workers’ Day celebration on Sunday in Abuja.

Celebrating under the theme “Labour, Politics and the Quest for Good Governance and Development in Nigeria’’, the event was jointly organised by the NLC and the Trade Union Congress(TUC).

He called on the federal government to take advantage of the five-year review window provided in the Electricity Sector Privatization Reform Act, already overdue.

5. MAYDAY: Our salaries can no longer sustain our households, Ebonyi workers cry out to Umahi

Ebonyi workers in commemoration of the May Day celebration, Sunday appealed to Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State to review their salaries even as they complained that their take-home pay could no longer sustain their households, considering the present economic realities in the country.

The State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Leonard Nkah made the request while addressing journalists in Abakaliki.

Comrade Ukah said, Ebonyi workers acknowledged the recent promotion released and the regular payment of their salaries by the state government but noted that “the take-home from their salaries, can no longer take care of their households,” and requested “a salary review to enable the workers to cope with the present economic realities in the country.”

The Ebonyi workers, according to the NLC Chairman also appealed to Governor Umahi to increase the workforce of the State, since the interview recruitment exercise for the civil servants was conducted to reduce the rate of unemployment in the state.

6. 2023: Anyanwu’s subsisting expulsion may cost PDP exclusion from polls, CUPP fears

THE Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, has expressed fears that the involvement of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu in the affairs of the party leading to the primary may result in its exclusion from participating in the 2023 general election.

The Coalition which alleged that Anyanwu was expelled from the party before his emergence as national secretary of the main opposition party, called on the PDP to immediately reconvene and appoint the Deputy National Secretary as Acting Secretary to avoid the consequential legal backlash of an expelled member signing official documents of the party.

“PDP candidates might be excluded from 2023 general elections if the National Secretary, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu is not removed from office over his subsisting expulsion from the party, before his emergence,” the coalition’s spokesperson, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, said in a statement Sunday night.

Açcording to him, party leaders are expressing fear that “any INEC nomination form bearing the signature of the Secretary whose expulsion has not been lifted, may void such forms and give opponents legal ground to exclude the PDP from the 2023 ballots. “

7. 2023: Ayade’s Commissioners, aides, LG bosses jostle for offices

Many Commissioners, cabinet aides and local government chairmen currently serving under the administration of Governor Ben Ayade in Cross River State, are now jostling to get ticket of the All Progressive Congress (APC) for different positions in the 2023 elections. For instance, the Commissioner for Finance, Asuquo Ekpeyong jnr, is vying for the governorship ticket to succeed his boss.  The Commissioner for Agriculture, Ntufam Okon Owuna is going for the Senate seat of the southern senatorial district.

Commissioner for Industries, Peter Egbe is soliciting blessings and support for his aspiration to become the party flag bearer for the position of the Obubra-Etung Federal House of Representative seat. The General Manager of Cross River State Water Board, Mr. Victor Effiom Ekpo, is eyeing the Southern senatorial district seat. Secretary to the State government, Mrs. Tina Banko One, is gunning for the position of the Federal House of representative seat for Ikom/Boki Federal constituency.

The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Chief Martins Prim, is reportedly seeking the party’s ticket for the Northern Senatorial district seat of the State. Some council chairmen and chairpersons are not left out in the jostle for the 2023 elective positions. The Chairperson for Biase LGA, Mrs. Ada Egwu, is aspiring for the position of the Federal House of Representative for the Akamkpa-Biase federal constituency.

8. 2023: Ministers declare Tinubu God’s choice at crusade

A coalition of church founders and ministers under the auspices of the Integrity Ministers International Ministry incorporated (IMIM), yesterday at a prayer crusade formally unveiled Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as God’s choice for the 2023 presidential elections.

Addressing a mammoth crowd at the headquarters of IMIM at the Ikorodu axis of Lagos, Bishop Kayode Williams, Founder and Vice President of IMIM, revealed that the divine, prophetic message from God indicates that Tinubu, the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is the right person to lead the country come 2023.

According to him, God’s mandate to IMIM is to pray for the wellbeing of the country including its leadership. “It is true we’re all suffering now. But God has revealed to us that His anointed choice for the 2023 is Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He will turn around the fortunes of the country for good, so saith the Lord,” Williams stressed.

9. UN Secretary-General To Visit Nigeria, Other African Countries

United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG), Antonio Guterres, is billed to embark on a two-day visit to Nigeria beginning from Tuesday, May 3, 2022.

The Director, UN Information Centre (UNIC), Ronald Kayanja, in a state made available in Abuja through the National Information Officer, UNIC, Oluseyi Soremekun, said the visit will be the first mission of the ninth UNSG to Nigeria.

During the mission, Guterres will have an audience with President Muhammadu Buhari; the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo; religious leaders; women and youth leaders; the private sector and the diplomatic community.

The visit is part of the Secretary-General’s annual Ramadan solidarity visits, and Guterres will also visit Niger and Senegal, during which he will highlight the impact of the Ukraine war on the African continent.

10. Niger Commissioners Purchase APC Senate Form For Gov Sani-Bello

The Niger State Commissioners Forum has purchased an expression of interest and nomination form for the Niger North Senatorial seat under the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the state governor, Abubakar Sani-Bello.

While receiving the form at the Government House in Minna, the state capital, Governor Sani-Bello who said he had earlier made up his mind not to vie for any office after his tenure as governor elapses.

He, however, disclosed that the genuine call by different groups not just within the zone but throughout the state made him develop interest, adding that his refusal to do so would amount to being unfair.

“I am highly overwhelmed and grateful for this gesture. A long time ago I said I wasn’t going to contest for any office again and I wasn’t mincing words.
