1. Strike: ASUU branch threatens to sanction members over resumption

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has threatened to sanction members who comply with the directive of the management of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma to resume and present students’ results.

The PUNCH gathered that the management of the school had asked Heads of Departments to present the recently released first batch of 2019/2020 results to their respective Deans for National Youth Service Corps mobilisation.

But in a circular obtained by our correspondent on Sunday, the Chairman of ASUU, AAU Ekpoma, Dr Cyril Onogbosele, asked the union members not to comply with the university’s directive.

The circular was titled, ‘Compilation, submission, presentation, consideration and approval/endorsement of students results during ASUU strike: members of ASUU, AAU, Ekpoma should not comply’.

2. Group backs Emefiele over APC form, says no law breached

A group of Nigerians with a focus on national unity, innovation, and capacity under the aegis of Ideas Nigeria Movement, on Sunday, described as baseless, calls by various persons and associations for the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, to resign his position.

Emefiele had been largely criticised for his alleged partisanship and purchase of form to contest in the forthcoming primary of the All Progressives Congress, for the 2023 election.

But the INM in a statement by its Executive Secretary, Mallam Nadodo Abubakar, said Emefiele had not breached any law, especially the constitution, hence should not resign.

Emefiele had admitted that he was aware that a group of farmers had purchased the N100 million form on his behalf, but he was quick to reject the form, insisting that he was yet to take a decision on contesting for the Presidency.

3. Police arrest notorious kidnapper in Nasarawa

The Nasarawa State Police Command said it has arrested a 45-year-old notorious kidnapper, Mohammed Igbira, who had been disturbing the peace of residents of the Akwanga and Wamba Local Government Areas of the state.

Our correspondent gathered that the suspect, who is alleged to be a member of a dangerous kidnapping and armed robbery syndicate, was sent to a prison in Jos, Plateau State, for his nefarious activities but was later able to escape to Nasarawa State where he had been terrorising residents until his arrest.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Nasarawa Command, ASP Ramhan Nansel, made the disclosure while speaking to our correspondent in Lafia on Sunday.

He said, “The Police received information that a suspected member of a kidnapping and armed robbery syndicate, which operates between the Akwanga and Wamba LGAs of Nasarawa State, was sighted at the Wamba metropolis.

4. 2023: Atiku visits Osun, Oyo, woos PDP delegates ahead of presidential primary

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, on Sunday canvassed for votes from delegates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo and Osun, ahead of the party’s presidential primary slated for May 28.

Abubakar, who identified himself as a son of Osun, due to his marriage to Titi, one of his wives, from Ilesa Town, urged the delegates to give him their supports during the primary.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Abubakar is one of the PDP presidential aspirants seeking the party’s ticket for the 2023 presidential election.

Atiku, addressing the delegates at the party’s Secretariat in Osogbo, said he needed their supports to win the ticket.

5. 10 feared dead as explosion rocks illegal refinery in Abia

About 10 persons were feared dead following an explosion that occured at an illegal oil refinery located at Uzuaku Community in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State.

While three persons reportedly died at the scene of the incident which reportedly occured on Friday evening, seven others later died in the hospital where they were rushed to for medical treatment.

This is coming barely two weeks after  a deadly explosion at another illegal refinery claimed over 100 lives in Ohaji Egbema, Imo State.

6. Power generation falls 25% as DisCos reject 371MW

Power supply from the National Grid fell by 25.3 percent to 3,320.70 Megawatts yesterday from 4,446.02MW recorded last Sunday.

Checks by Vanguard on data supplied by the National System Operator showed that as at 5pm, 19 power generation companies were on the grid.

The largest electricity supplier was Egbin Power with 544MW, followed by Azura-Edo IPP with 426MW and Delta Power with 367MW. The least suppliers were Omoku (Gas) with 46.20MW and Paras Energy with 46.80MW.

7. House cancel emergency session for airline operators Monday

The House of Representatives has cancelled the emergency plenary session scheduled for Monday to discuss what they termed critical national issues.

Instead, Its leadership is to meet with critical stakeholders in the aviation sector on Monday to discuss issues on operation of airlines in the country.

A statement by the Clerk to the House of Representatives, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, said the cancellation followed the near resolution of issues that necessitated the emergency session in the first place.

8. NDLEA arrests two pregnant women, others at Lagos airport

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested two pregnant women, Mrs Seun Babatunde and Mrs Gloria Asibor, for alleged drug trafficking.

Spokesman of the agency, Femi Babafemi, in a statement on Sunday, said they were among traffickers arrested by operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Ikeja, Lagos for attempting to import and export illicit drugs last week.

Babafemi said the first to enter the agency’s dragnet was a Brazilian returnee, Nworie Phillip Chikwendu who was arrested on Tuesday May 3rd during an inward clearance of passengers on Qatar Airways flight from Sao Paulo, Brazil enroute Doha to Lagos.

9. PRP’s Baba-Inna declares intention to run for Adamawa governorship

Ibrahim Baba-Inna, a retired naval officer, has declared his intention to run for the governorship of Adamawa State under the platform of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).

Baba-Inna made his declaration at the Fasnet Cinema in Jimeta, Yola, promising to reinvent the state and give all citizens a new lease of life.

“My vision of a Greater Adamawa is one where every single productive citizen is gainfully employed and leading to the socio-economic prosperity of the state, leveraging on specialisation in agri-business.

“My journey to this point has been long. For years, I have nursed a burden to assist in the upliftment of the vulnerable, the downtrodden, the forgotten and the helpless,” he said.

10. EPL: Man City suffer defensive crisis ahead of Wolves clash

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, is facing a defensive injury ahead of their Premier League clash at Wolves on Wednesday.

Kyle Walker and John Stones were unavailable for the 5-0 win over Newcastle on Sunday.

Both defenders are not expected to play again this season.

Ruben Dias, meanwhile, was taken off at half-time with a muscle problem and is also set to miss the remaining three games.
