1. Rivers accountant general Siminialayi clinches PDP gov ticket

The Rivers State Accountant General, Fubara Siminialayi, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state ahead of the 2023 general election.

Siminialayi polled 721 votes to defeat his two closest rivals, Isaac Kamaku and George Kelly, who had 86 votes and 37 votes respectively.

The immediate past Secretary to the State Government, Dr Tammy Danagogo, came fourth with 36 votes.

A total of 898 votes were cast, while eight were voided, according to the election committee chairman, Prof. Walter Mboto.

2. Imo PDP postpones rescheduled primaries

After waiting for over nine hours, the Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, on Wednesday, postponed its House of Representatives and state House of Assembly primaries.

This came after an earlier date for the primaries was postponed due to the internal crisis between the Secretary of the party, Samuel Anyanwu, and a former governor of the state, Emeka Ihedioha.

On Wednesday, thousands of party faithful who gathered at the Kanu Nwankwo Stadium in Owerri, waited for hours only to be informed that the election won’t hold.

The development made the party faithful to protest.

3. 59 test positive for monkeypox in Spain – Govt

Spain, on Wednesday, detected 59 cases of monkeypox, the government said, adding that it would obtain vaccines and antiviral drugs to stem its spread through a joint European Union procurement deal.

A total of 59 people tested positive for the illness via polymerase chain reaction test, of whom 20 were confirmed to have it through genome sequencing, Health Minister Carolina Darias said.

In total, 171 suspected cases of monkeypox had been reported nationwide.

“Spain also intends to acquire Imvanex smallpox vaccines and Tecovirimat antivirals, usually used to treat the same disease, through an EU joint procurement scheme to try to stall the spread of monkeypox,” Darias said.

4. 2023: Buhari has prepared me for task ahead – Osinbajo tells Lagos delegates

The Vice President made the remarks at the grandfinale of his consultations with stakeholders and delegates of the All Progressives Congress, APC, across the country, held at Ikeja, Lagos ahead of the party’s presidential primaries.

Lagos deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, led other dignitaries in the entourage of the Vice President.

The party faithful who were apparently elated showed their admiration and support for Osinbajo and his presidential aspiration.

Speaking to the large crowd, he explained why he decided to vie for the post of President, saying, “My decision to run for president is on account of the fact that first, I desire deeply to serve this country, to serve the people of this country, especially the man on the street, the common man.

5. Borno, Katsina killings: Terrorists now boxed into a corner – Buhari

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has said that the rampaging terrorists and bandits have been reduced to scavenging from artisanal miners and farmers for survival because they are boxed into a corner.

The President has also expressed mourning over the senseless killing in Borno and Katsina states by terrorists and bandits in the past two days.

A statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said, “Today, Nigeria is in mourning for the senseless loss of lives seen in Borno State and Katsina State over the last 48 hours.

6. Agbu Kefas wins Taraba PDP gov’ship ticket 

Lt. Col. Agbu Kefas (rtd) has won the Taraba governorship ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

He polled 443 votes to clinch the party’s ticket from the 517 votes casted.

The first runner up was the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Prof. Joseph Kunini who polled 31 votes followed by Prof. Jerome Nyame with 24 votes.

Sen. Joel Ikenya polled 11 votes while Hilkia Buba-Joda has 6 votes.

Chairman of the electoral committee, Kabir Bappa Jauro also said two votes were invalid.

7. Lesser delegates for primaries good – Bala Mohammed

Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed on Wednesday dismissed the frenzy that has trailed the refusal of President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the latest amendment to the Electoral Act, saying a smaller number of delegates is in the interest of aspirants.

Mohammed, who is also a presidential aspirant on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), spoke while briefing State House Correspondents after leading an entourage of Bauchi representatives on a thank-you- visit to President Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to him, the process of amending the electoral act did not start on time and signing now might go against National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines for elections.

Some political parties had in recent times pressured President Buhari to assent to the amendment to current Section 84 (8) which provides that delegates to vote at the Indirect Primaries and National Convention of political parties to elect candidates for elections shall be those democratically elected for that purpose only.

8. Soludo imposes curfew on eight Anambra Councils

Anambra Governor Charles Soludo has imposed a 6pm- 6am curfew on eight local government areas in the State over insecurity.

The affected local government areas are: Aguata, Ihiala, Ekwusigo, Nnewi North, Nnewi South, Ogbaru, Orumba North and Orumba South.

He ordered tricycles, motorcycles and shuttle buses must not operate in the affected local government areas on Monday’s sit-at-home until further notice.

The Governor said: “With effect from tomorrow, Friday, 26th May, 2022, a 6pm to 6am curfew is hereby placed on motorcycles (okada), tricycles (keke), and shuttle buses in Aguata, Ihiala, Ekwusigo, Nnewi North, Nnewi South, Ogbaru, Orumba North and Orumba South Local Governments until further notice.

“Until further notice also, motorcycles, keke and shuttle buses are banned from operating in these local governments on Mondays until the Sit-at-Home completely stops.

9. Find killers of pregnant woman, children in Anambra – Adegboruwa to Soludo

Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa has joined the condemnation of the murder of pregnant Harira Jibril (Fatima) and her children.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in a statement on Wednesday told Anambra Governor Charles Soludo to find the killers.

The deceased, from Adamawa, were gunned down on Sunday by the “unknown gunmen” at Isulo, Orumba North Local Government Area.

Adegboruwa said the kids Khadija (7), Hadiza (5) and Zaituna (2) were mowed down in an insensate act of terrorism, recklessly perpetrated without any justification.

“The life of the unborn baby that Mrs Jibril carried in her womb at the time of this dastardly act was also cruelly terminated”, he fumed.

The lawyer said there can be no justification for the brutality extended to toddlers and the unborn.

10. PDP postpones primary election, as reps member withdraws from race in Imo

The House of Assembly/House of Representatives primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which were supposed to hold on Wednesday in Owerri Imo State capital has been postponed to Thursday.

Speaking on the development, the State Publicity of the PDP, Emenike Emeregini, said the exercise that was supposed to take place at Kanu Nwankwo Stadium in Owerri, was postponed because of security reasons.

The party said it would not allow the primaries to be conducted late into the night.

According to the opposition party, “The state chairman of the party said he did not want the election to be conducted in the middle of the night for security reasons.

“The primaries will start very early on Thursday and will end early so that delegates can go home early. ”
