1. FG sends 640 soldiers on peacekeeping duties amid insecurity
Nigeria has deployed no fewer than 640 soldiers to different peacekeeping missions in other countries despite the rising cases of insecurity across the country.
The figure was based on media reports on deployment between July 2021 and May 2022.
On July 21, 2021 the Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Magashi (retd.) said over 200 Nigerian soldiers were serving in the Economic Community For West Africa States mission in the Gambia.
Sixty-two soldiers and officers were also sent to Mali on a peacekeeping mission on December 3, 2021, while no fewer than 173 troops were deployed for peacekeeping mission to Guinea Bissau on April 21 , 2022.
2. Buhari embarks on eighth foreign trip in five months
The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Tuesday, embarked on a two-day state visit to Madrid, the capital city of Spain.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the President’s visit is in response to an invitation by his Spanish counterpart, Pedro Sanchez.
While there, he would meet Head of State of the Spanish nation, King Felipe VI, and discuss issues of mutual interest to both countries, which will expectedly result in the signing of agreements and Memoranda of Understanding on a wide range of areas such as the extradition and transfer of convicted persons, mutual legal assistance, cultural matters, cooperation towards fighting crime and enhancing security, as well as issues affecting dependants of diplomatic staff.
“Also on the agenda are cooperation on energy, trade and investment, transportation, public health and sports development,” Adesina said.
3. Robbery convict gets seven years jail term after appeasing victim
A Lagos State High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square has sentenced a man, Madu Uche, to seven years’ imprisonment for armed robbery.
The convict had initially pleaded not guilty to three counts of conspiracy and armed robbery on October 6, 2021, when he was first arraigned.
However, on Tuesday, the prosecution team, led by Olayemi Shofolu, told justice Y.A. Adesanya that the defendant had agreed to plead guilty to the offences.
Shofolu also informed the court they had filed and executed a sentencing agreement which was to the knowledge of the attorney-general of the state.

4. COVID-19: 18 million Nigerians fully vaccinated so far, says FG
THE federal government, Tuesday, said a total of18,291,072 Nigerians representing 16.4 percent of Nigeria’s eligible population have so far been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
Similarly, the government said 30,327,550 persons representing 23.9 percent have been vaccinated with first dose, 14,629,451 persons have received their second dose while 1,229,909 persons have received their booster doses, respectively.
Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of National Primary Health Care Development Agency, NPHCDA,Dr Faisal Shuaib said these at the flag-off of COVID-19 vaccination at community pharmacies in Abuja.
5. [PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARIES] Buhari’s sucker punch to APC govs: I’ll pick my successor
President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, took the first step towards selecting his successor. He asked Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, at their much-postponed meeting to allow him choose his successor.
Vanguard reporter saw the governors leaving the meeting with long faces, an indication that they were not pleased with the development.
However, the president at the meeting dug in by saying that since the party allowed the governors to pick re-election tickets or determined who would succeed them, they should give him the honour of picking his successor.
The meeting was called for President Buhari “to show his hand” on his preferred successor and concretize plans for the party’s presidential primaries slated for June 6 and 7.
6. Foreign capital inflow rises 60% to $610m, outflow rises faster
Though Nigeria’s economy recorded a significant rise in foreign capital importation year-on-year (YoY) by 60 per cent to $610 million in January 2022, against the $380 million in January 2021, the rate of capital outflow from the economy increased massively by 163 per cent to $290 million in January 2022, from $110 million in January 2021.
However, the data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, in its Economic Report for January 2022, which contained these figures also shows that portfolio investment (mainly money market instruments) rose massively YoY by 390 per cent to $400 million, from $10 million in January 2021.
Other investments (mainly loans) declined YoY by 43 per cent to $170 million in January from $290 million in January 2021.
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) fell YoY by 33 per cent to $40 million, from $60 million in January 2021.

7. Falana decries use of foreign currencies for transactions
Lagos Lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has asked Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele to provide information on measures adopted to halt trading of goods and services in foreign currencies instead of naira.
The request came in a May 24 letter under Freedom of Information Act, 2011.
He urged Emefiele to provide the information not later than seven days.
It followed alleged use of foreign currencies during primaries of political parties and collapse of the naira in the parallel market.
8. Monkeypox: Fed Govt bans sale, consumption of bush meat
Federal Government yesterday banned sale and consumption of bush meat.
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Dr Mohammad Abubakar urged hunters and dealers of bush meat to stop the business.
It is to prevent spread of monkeypox pathogen (organism causing disease to its host).
Abubakar, in a statement, asked Nigerians to avoid contact with persons suspected to be infected with monkeypox.
The minister urged veterinary epidemiology officers, field surveillance agents and veterinarians to step up surveillance to pick any possible case of Monkeypox in animals.

A former Secretary to Oyo State Government, Barrister Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, has won the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket in Oyo South Senatorial District.
Alli emerged as the APC candidate in Oyo South during the re-run primary election held on Tuesday.
The result of the primary election was announced Tuesday evening.
Our correspondent gathered that the primary election had earlier been held on Sunday. The announcement of the result was suspended due to over voting.
10. Akwa Ibom APC guber primary: I accept my defeat – Ekong
One of the frontline governorship aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Akwa Ibom State, Prof. Christopher Ekong, who lost out during the just-concluded primary election in the state, has finally accepted defeat.
He urged other aspirants who could not make it during the nomination to do same and support the candidate to see how the party can wrestle out power from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, at the 2023 polls.
It could be recalled that a lot of dissension has greeted the announcement of Mr Akanimo Udofia as the governorship candidate of the APC in Akwa Ibom.
A former aide to President Mohammadu Buhari on Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Ita Enang, had earlier rejected the outcome of the exercise.
