EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) has demolished and removed illegal structures beneath the CMS bridge as part of a concerted effort to ensure the general cleanliness of Lagos environs in accordance with global best practices.

The Agency’s Corps Marshal, CP Gbemisola Akinpelu (rtd), made the announcement at the Command Headquarters in Bolade-Oshodi, noting that the exercise was in response to complaints about street traders and miscreants operating near the CMS axis and beneath the Eko Bridge.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had also directed that the refrigerators and cold rooms built with illegal connections under the bridge be dismantled to avoid a repeat of the Apongbon bridge incident, according to Akinpelu, who added that the Lagos Waste Management Authority had also dismantled and carted away other illegal structures (LAWMA).

She also ordered that the cleared area be maintained by Agency operatives stationed along the CMS axis, warning that anyone caught returning to the area for illegal trade would be prosecuted under the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017.

While calling for voluntary compliance with State Environmental Laws, Akinpelu urged street traders and hawkers to refrain from displaying their wares for trading under bridges, pedestrian bridges, walkways, setbacks, sidewalks, road verges, and medians, stating that such unruly behavior has a negative impact on the environment and obstructs the free flow of human and vehicular traffic across the State.

The Corps Marshal also advised pedestrians to use pedestrian bridges for safety reasons, as well as private and public property owners to have a valid waste collection contract in place to ensure proper waste disposal and promote cleanliness in the state.
