EKO HOT BLOG reports that Senators Enyinnaya Abaribe and Yahaya Abdullahi have resigned their positions as minority and majority leaders of the senate respectively.

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, announced this at the resumption of plenary yesterday.

The resignation of the two lawmakers followed their defection from the political parties on which platforms they were elected as senators.

Abdullahi and Abaribe fell out with their parties and switched to other parties following their failure to secure tickets to contest the 2023 elections.

While Abaribe dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Abdullahi defected to PDP from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, Abaribe’s exit as minority leader was deferred to Wednesday as a result of the failure of the senate president to come with his defection and resignation letters to plenary.

Lawan said, “Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe decamped from the PDP to APGA. He also resigned his position as minority leader of this chamber. With this, the position of the minority leader is vacant for the PDP to fill.”

Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, in his resignation letter, said his decision to dump the APC was informed by the democratic challenges and deficits faced by the party in Kebbi State.

He alleged that Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State illegally decapitated the state’s leadership of APC, imposed unelected ward, local government and state executives of the party.

He explained that all attempts to remedy the situation through the intervention of the North West governors and the defunct Abdullahi Adamu-led National Reconciliation Committee failed.

He said, “So, after having failed to get justice in my former party, the APC, I have jumped ship to the PDP together with our teeming supporters in a struggle to democratically bring to an end the misrule and tyranny currently gripping Kebbi State.”

Also, the formal defection of Senators Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North) and Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central) from Kebbi State were conveyed in two separate letters addressed to Lawan and read on the floor during plenary.
