1. Court remands five youths who tortured lady in viral video
A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara State, has ordered the remand of five young men who allegedly tortured a lady in a viral video at the Federal Correctional facility in Mandala, Ilorin till August 1, 2022.
The five accused persons, Jimoh Abdulfatai, Olamide Babatunde, Afeez Ayomide, Agboola Abdulsamad, and Yakubu Mustapha, were slammed with a five-count charge.
They were alleged to have assaulted and tortured a young lady, Ayomide Afolayan, of Songa village, Shao in Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State on Monday, June 20, 2022.
According to the prosecution, the five accused persons were charged with criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation, and indecent assault contrary to sections 97, 114, 210 and 391 of the Penal Code Law and punishable under the same sections of the law.
2. Gunmen abduct Ebonyi traditional ruler
Suspected gunmen have kidnapped the traditional ruler of Isuokoma autonomous community in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Eze Ambrose Ogbu.
The PUNCH leanrt the monarch was abducted on Wednesday night by yet-to-be-identified persons at his Palace in Isu, in the council area.
A reliable source and stakeholder in the community, who pleaded anonymity, confirmed the incident to our correspondent, in Abakaliki, on Thursday.
According to the source, the royal father’s captors were yet to contact the family as of the time of filing this report, Thursday afternoon.
3. IPPIS eliminated 70,000 ‘ghost’ workers, saved govt N220bn – FG
The Federal Government-backed Integration Personnel and Payroll Information System has, so far, exposed and eliminated about 70,000 ghost workers in the civil service system, the Director-General, Bureau of Public Service Reforms, Dr Dasuki Arabi, revealed on Thursday.
Arabi added that the government has saved at least N220bn, and N10tn through the Treasury Single Account since it was fully implemented by the Buhari regime.
Arabi stated this at the 43rd session of the ministerial briefing organised by the Presidential Communication Team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The DG who gave updates on the Bureau’s performance in implementing government reforms and programmes also revealed that IPPIS has led to the reduction of the Federal Civil Service personnel to 720,000.

4. PDP chieftain, Orubebe meets Wike behind close door
A former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Godswill Orubebe, on Thursday, met the Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State.
Orubebe met with Wike behind closed doors at his private residence in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, but none of them spoke to journalists after the meeting.
Recall the former Niger Delta Affairs Minister had earlier resigned his membership from the party.
Orubebe had made known his grouse with the zoning of the party’s presidential candidacy to the Northern region of the country.
5. Ekweremadu’s people crucifying him while Abba Kyari’s stood by him― Reno Omokri
A former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, has reacted to the arrest of two Nigerians, Ike Ekweremadu and Beatrice in the United Kingdom, UK over alleged organ harvesting.
Reno lamented that as bad as former Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari is, his people are staying by him until he is proven guilty while Ekweremadu’s own people are the ones already condemning him.
Stating further that in the US, Trump’s people stayed loyal to him, no matter the charge. An accusation is not a conviction.
Metropolitan Police had said the couple was charged with conspiracy to facilitate the travel of another person for organ harvesting.
6. We don’t have voters registration centres in Niger Republic – INEC
THE Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has dismissed as fake news reports that it has 21 voters registration centres in Niger Republic.
A caller, who said he was having challenges registering as .a voter in Mushin, Lagos, told Wazobia 95.1FM on Wednesday night the. iNEC had 21 registration centres in Niger Republic.
Dismissing the allegation as fake news, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief press secretary to the INEC National Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, said it was time people are punished for fake news.
His words: “The Commission has 176, 846 polling units across the country and none outside Nigeria. I think it is high time we promulgated a law in this country to hold anybody spreading fake news accountable. Freedom of speech should not be a license for reckless statements.”

7. FHA committed to provision of affordable housing – Ashafa
The Federal Government is committed to the provision of housing to all segments of Nigerians, MD/ CEO of Federal Housing Authority ( FHA) Senator Gbenga Ashafa has said.
He spoke during the unveiling of Express View Estate, a partnership between Federal Housing Authority Mortgage Bank (FHAMB) and Mixta Africa in Lugbe, Abuja.
Answering questions from reporters on the much-bandied 17 million housing deficit in Nigeria, Ashafa while applauding the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari government in addressing the nation’s challenges, noted that there is no actual empirical data to back the housing deficit figures as claimed.
Making reference to the position of Minister of Works & Housing, Babatunde Fashola on the much-touted figure, Ashafa said: “What the Minister of Works and Housing have been saying right from onset was that we have not been able to come up with specific deficit figure. However, if you look at the project we are embarking on now, are we going to count the units as part of the houses in existence? What about the number of unoccupied houses everywhere, are we counting them?
8. N25.7bn fraud: Appeal Court affirms conviction of ex-Bank PHB MD Atuche
The Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos has affirmed the conviction of a former Managing Director of the defunct Bank PHB Plc, Francis Atuche, for N25.7biillion fraud.
The court also affirmed the conviction of Atuche’s accomplice and co-convict, Ugo Anyanwu, who was the bank’s former Chief Financial Officer.
It also affirmed the acquittal of Atuche’s wife, Elizabeth.

9. No third term ambition – Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday ruled out a third term in office.
He spoke at a bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson.
The parley was held on the margins of the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Kigali, Rwanda.
Buhari reiterated his resolve to respect the maximum term limit in the Nigerian Constitution.
The PM had asked if the Nigerian leader would run for office again.
“Another term for me? No! The first person who tried it didn’t end very well”, he said.
On insecurity, Buhari said after the Muammar Gadaffi regime, armed guards in countries in the Sahel have been causing havoc.
10. Lawmaker warns colleagues against increment of allowances of public officers
Onofiok Luke, member of the House of Representatives has warned his colleagues not to consider increment of allowances of public officers.
The lawmaker stated this on Thursday, during a debate on a motion to address the working conditions of judicial officers.
Mr Luke Had prayed that the House should urge the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to review the salaries of judicial officers.
He said that in light of the inflation and poor exchange rate, the government should upwardly review the remuneration package of the judicial officers.
But the motion was met with opposition from lawmakers who asked that salaries of all public officials should be increased.
