LASG Empowers 250 Vulnerable, Indigent Women In Riverine Communities

EKO HOT BLOG reports that 250 vulnerable, indigent women from four riverine communities of Lagos State have received training and empowerment in nine different tuition-free professions from the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA).

The short-term skills acquisition program’s graduation ceremony was held in the Ese-Offin Community Hall in the Oto-Awori Local Council Development Area (LCDA), and the Commissioner for WAPA, Mrs. Cecilia Bolaji Dada, said it was intended to improve the participants’ socioeconomic standing and financial capacity.

Mrs. Olufunke Shyllon, the Ministry’s director of women affairs, who was Mrs. Dada’s representative at the occasion, said that the State Government has stepped up its efforts to significantly reduce all types of poverty, especially among vulnerable women residents who are known to be load bearers.

In her words: “The aim of the programme is to properly groom women for financial growth in every nook and cranny of the State. This particular short-term training is targeted at women drawn from the riverine communities of Ese-Offin, Egan-Oromi, Ishagira and Ojote-Alate within the Oto-Awori LCDA. The present administration is committed to empowering vulnerable women to be financially independent”.

While urging beneficiaries to continuously learn, the Commissioner encouraged the graduands to indulge in more self-development, saying “Do not think that your training ends here. You should continue to hone your skills so that you become masters of your craft”.

She, therefore, called on prospective students, particularly unemployed persons or the underemployed, to enrol in any of the 19 Skills Acquisition Centres spread across the State for the various short and long-term vocational training and skills acquisition programmes.

In his address, the Baale of Ese Offin, Chief Alabi Olusegun, commended the State Government for delivering the dividends of democracy in order to improve the lives of residents for socio-economic development of the State.

He said: “I am very impressed by what the Lagos State government and WAPA have done for my people. I urge the beneficiaries to make proper use of their acquired skills and embrace all forms of developmental strategies. Please, we look forward to more of such impactful opportunities in our communities”.

At the ceremony, the 250 graduands received Certificates of Completion and start-up packs for nine different vocations including Wig-Making and Hair Braiding, Make-Up and Gele-Tying, Tie and Dye, Catering and Confectionaries, Garments Stoning, Pomade-Making, Insecticide and Stove Wick, Ankara Craft and Interior Decoration.

One of the beneficiaries of the programme, Opeyemi Lawal, who acquired skills in Garments Stoning, expressed her gratitude to the Lagos State Government for the opportunity.

“I intend to start a business and implement the entrepreneurial skills acquired during the training programme. I have faith that my business will thrive and I will be able to properly provide for my family”, she stated.
