EKO HOT BLOG reports that the lawmaker representing Epe Constituency 1 at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Abiodun Tobun, has charged members of his constituency to make frantic efforts in the registration and collection of their permanent voters’ card, PVC.
This he said is significant in adequately preparing for the 2023 general elections.
Tobun made the call in Epe at the 8th Annual Constituency Stakeholders’ meeting organised by the Lagos State House of Assembly.
The lawmaker, while delivering his keynote address, said it was pertinent to make adequate preparations for the 2023 General Elections which will kick off by February.
He stressed that the town hall meeting tagged “2023 General Elections: The Imperatives of Permanent Voters Card, PVC,” was strategically chosen to enlighten his constituents on the premium placed on their civic responsibility which is a catalyst in electing the right leaders.
“As you are all aware, general elections for the next democratic dispensation would be held from February 2023, hence the need to commence preparations to ensure its success at all levels.
The imperatives of the Permanent Voters’ Card as mentioned in the theme are hinged on the need to
ensure that we are eligible to exercise our civic responsibility”.
“We engage in active participation in the general elections especially in ensuring that we vote the right, trustworthy, competent and capable candidates to be our leaders and representatives at all levels of government”.
“Of course, the need for this cannot be overemphasized as a very important civic duty and a critical key to ensuring the sustenance of our transformative government and ensuring democracy in the state and the nation,” he averred.
Speaking further, Tobun applauded his constituents for their responsiveness. He, however, decried the notion that over 20 million PVCs are cooling off in INEC offices scattered across the nation of which Lagos State and his constituency are no exception. He added that such development would create room for the emergence of incompetent leaders in critical political posts.
“While commending you, our constituents, for being responsive to matters affecting our communities and the state at all times, it is however quite worrisome that over 20 million PVCs remain uncollected across the nation according to a recent INEC report and out of this huge figure, 1 million are from Lagos State.
“This situation does not augur well for our progress, our democracy and the development of the state as it may create an opportunity for incompetent persons to be elected as our leaders and representatives and thus overturn our achievements”.
Speaking on the immense contributions of the Lagos State House of Assembly in partnership with the past Governors towards the development of the Centre of Excellence over the years, Tobun said:
“As you know, Lagos State has been so blessed with great and visionary leaders and representatives right from the 2nd Republic in 1979 when Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande came on board as the first civilian governor, supported by a vibrant House of Assembly, and most significantly from 1999 in the 4th Republic with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu not just emerging as the governor of Lagos State but referred to as the architect of modern day Lagos”
“All these were made possible due to the citizens actively voting at elections to choose the right candidates. Supported by the committed and patriotic legislators in the State House of Assembly over the years”
“Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu initiated remarkable and comprehensive policies and reforms which were successfully implemented and built upon by worthy, credible and competent successors that were freely elected by the people, and who continued to transform the state beyond imagination from Governors, Babatunde Raji Fashola, Akinwunmi Ambode and our current dynamic and pragmatic Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwoolu”
“From job creation, employment, empowerment, waste disposal, safety and security, business opportunities, housing, traffic control and transportation, healthcare delivery, dependable revenue generation, reliable justice system, healthy environment, infrastructural development, education amongst others and from Megacity to Smart City.”
Tobun averred that the active participation of Lagosians in political activities has prospered the Land of Aquatic Splendour which has become a model for other states and countries.
“Lagos State has continued to excel, and it is no surprise that, although a state, it is ranked as the 5th largest economy in Africa with our proud records of the dividend of democracy and achievements, we have continued to inspire many states and countries all over the world who are learning from us, and it is highly instructive to note that these achievements have only been possible through the active, determined and patriotic participation of citizens like you including those to lead us by voting for the candidates and representatives at all levels of government”
“It is through the continued performance of your civic responsibilities as citizens and as guaranteed by the constitution that we can stabilize our polity”.
“Your labour, sweats and sacrifices in the rain and the sun have never been in vain as these have ensured that Lagos State remains in good hands under great leaders, visionary governors, vibrant and responsive legislators, and the right local government council officials”.
“These leaders, interestingly, have continued to shine by representing the State and serve the nation even in higher capacities and at different levels of responsibilities,” he stated.
He further emphasised the need for constituents to register for their PVC ahead of the 2023 general election, saying it was the only means to combat thugs and incompetent leaders.
“It is high time our people trooped out in large numbers to register for their PVCs. I am saying this because our voters’ cards are our power. The people can decide with it by voting their choice of candidates and without it, that means we are giving way for thugs to rule us”
“We don’t want thugs, we want those who are competent and trustworthy,” he asserted.
