EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has taken a strong stance against the poaching of athletes from the state and tasked the state’s sports administrators with putting a stop to it.
Adeboye Adeyinka, the Lagos Governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Sports, revealed this in a conversation with Sunday PUNCH.
Some of the nation’s best young athletes have come from Lagos throughout the years, yet they have abruptly moved to compete for other states and win medals.
However, Adeyinka stated that the Governor has warned that the trend must stop.
“The Governor has already given the mandate (against poaching), that if it happens again, we (officials) will be held responsible and, the Governor is very right,” Adeyinka stated.
He added, “We groom outstanding young footballers, athletes and boxers in Lagos, but other states come in and hijack them. Lagos is now seen as a grooming ground, while other states are expecting ready-made stars, which shouldn’t be.
“It’s as if we are allowing them to take our stars away; when we groom, they hijack. We are not tired of grooming and Lagos athletes are always doing excellently well because we believe in young sportsmen and women
Already, we are going down to the secondary schools to select for the incoming National Sports Festival.”

On whether the athletes were being hijacked because they were better treated by the states who poached them, Adeyinka added, “Hijacking our athletes is not our own fault. If an athlete feels he is doing well here, he’ll stay, the government doesn’t play with their welfare.
“In terms of the benefits they get from the state, the government gives a lot of scholarships to its athletes at all levels. That is why I say people should emulate the Lagos State Government.
