EKO HOT BLOG reports that a Non-Governmental Organisation, The Emerald Blazers, has called for serious efforts to combat the scourge of unacceptable acts of immorality perpetrated by young people in Epe.
The President of the NGO, Mr Salami Idris Adebanjo made this call in an interview with EKO HOT BLOG during the reorientation and sensitisation campaign tagged “Mentorship, Reorientation and Sensitisation Project Against Social Vices,” for Secondary Schools In Epe Division held at Lagos State Model College, Igbonla, Eredo LCDA, Epe.
Adebanjo described the worrisome situation as a time-bomb inimical to the advancement of the community when it eventually explodes.
He stressed that a high-level synergy with all stakeholders across various communities in the town is a sure catalyst to combat the alarming rate of acts of social vices which has, to a large extent, become a norm among Nigeria’s teeming youth population of which Epe Division is no exception.
“It is open knowledge that acts of social vices exhibited by young people across our beloved communities in Epe have become embarrassing, counterproductive and distasteful.
“That’s why we’ve taken it upon ourselves to take action to salvage the situation as much as possible by taking the campaign to schools to complement the efforts of the industriously efficient teachers and the government,” he said.
Adebanjo, a Lecturer in the Mathematics Unit, Department of General Studies Education, School of Education of former Michael Otedola College of Primary Education now Lagos State University of Education, LASUED, said that it was time for all and sundry to rise and address the critical situation.
He said that future leaders are being lost to avoidable deaths which he described as disheartening.
“You can imagine how cultism, drug abuse and addiction, wire fraud, prostitution now called “hook up,” ritual killing, rape, thuggery, gangsterism and other barbaric acts have snuffed out lives of sons and daughters of our kinsmen.
“That’s why we have put this project together and we would like to enjoin the parents, imams, pastors, career professionals and even the traditional institutions to act. When these acts are collectively condemned, I believe they would be drastically reduced. All of us must do something,” he said.
The Publicity Secretary of the NGO, Mr Osifeko Mark Olaniyi, described the project as a huge sacrifice, stressing that the first phase which began at Epe’s premier post-primary institution, Epe Grammar School on 28th June 2022 and terminated at Model College Igbonla on 21st July 2022, has proved to be effective for review in plans and actions for the next phase.
Olaniyi who expressed the team’s profound gratitude to the leadership of Education District III, Falomo-Ikoyi, Lagos for approving the project also disclosed that with the District’s backing, the NGO was able to sensitise a total of twenty-eight (28) Junior and Senior Secondary School students across Epe Central and Eredo LCDA.
He added that Secondary Schools in Ibeju-Lekki and Ikosi-Ejinrin LCDA would be sensitised in the 2022/2023 academic session commencing by September 2022.
“The project, though herculean, has availed us with first-hand experience of cases involving social vices across the schools we have visited. We’ve been able to speak up against indiscipline, truancy, drug abuse, examination malpractices, cultism, sexual harassment, cybercrimes, gangsterism and others.

“More interesting is that the Administrators of the school we have visited so far want the sensitisation to be continuous and we’ve pledged our support to be available at all times.
“I want to use this medium to appreciate our public-spirited team members for exhibiting unparalleled commitment. Our vibrant Convener, Mr Muyiwa Okesanya was superb in providing us with his excellent leadership style. Special appreciation also goes to all members of the group and volunteers who were all instrumental in achieving this noble feat,” he said.
