1. Terrorist threats to kidnap Buhari laughable, says FG

The Federal Government, on Wednesday, described threats by some terrorists to abduct the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), as laughable.

It also reacted to threats by some lawmakers in the upper chamber of the National Assembly to remove the President over the rising insecurity nationwide, saying the government is “working 24 hours” to bring the situation under control.

Addressing State House correspondents shortly after the Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by Buhari, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, commended the lawmakers for their patriotism but added that work was ongoing to restore order.

This follows the release of viral video footage showing terrorists—including an escapee from the July 5 Kuje Prison attack—whipping the remaining 43 of over 61 passengers kidnapped from a Kaduna-bound train on March 28.

2. Harvard school: Gbajabiamila apologises to Nigerians

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, on Wednesday, described his decision to post a picture of himself attending a leadership course at Harvard University in the United States of America as not being sensitive to the plight of Nigerian students currently suffering from the shutdown of academic activities in public universities due to the ongoing strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities and other unions.

The PUNCH had reported how the Speaker came under fire for celebrating his “return to class” amidst the ASUU strike.

Several activists and stakeholders described the post as insensitive.

But the speaker took to his verified Twitter handle on Wednesday via @femigbaja to apologise.

3. CAN, Dogara, others raise doubt over 2023 polls

Prominent Nigerians, Christian political leaders and the Christian Association of Nigeria on Wednesday raised fears that February 25, 2022, presidential election would either make or destroy the future of the country.

They are a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara; the Senator representing Adamawa North District in the National Assembly, Elisha Ishaku Abbo; outgoing President of CAN, Samson Ayokunle and the leaders of various Christian blocs and denominations.

They also faulted the All Progressives Congress for presenting a Muslim-Muslim ticket for the 2023 election, describing it as “reprehensible and ungodly”.

They stated these during a symposium on the leadership crises in Nigeria, which held in Abuja as part of activities marking the 12th General Assembly of CAN and the leadership transition ceremony with the theme, ‘The role of the Church in times like this’.

4. Galadima may know more about terrorists threat against Buhari — BMO

Buba Galadima, a former ally of President Muhammadu Buhari, probably knows a lot more about the terrorists on rampage in some parts of the country than he is telling Nigerians.

Raising this alarm, the Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) said the manner Galadima spoke on the possibility of the President being kidnapped soon showed that the man knows more than he is telling.

In a statement signed by its Chairman Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary Cassidy Madueke, the group said that Galadima spoke like someone who knows what the terrorists want, “and probably how to get it.

5. Monkey pox: Reduce sex partners — WHO advises men

The World Health Organisation has for the first time issued concrete recommendations about sexual behaviour for those most at risk, in view of increasing monkey pox cases in many countries.

According to WHO figures on Wednesday, some 98 per cent of the reported cases involved men who have sexual contact with multiple other men.

The WHO asked this group to, for the moment, reduce the number of sexual partners, reconsider sex with new partners, and exchange contact details with any new partners to enable follow-up if needed.

6. Terrorists kill 3, abduct 13 in Kaduna community, loot shops

Terrorists have on Monday 25th July, 2022 around 6:00pm, attacked Damari community in Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State on motorcycles wielding sophisticated weapons.

Locals said the terrorists had invaded   Damari town of Kazage Ward in the Eastern part of Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area on several occasions.

Last Monday; the hoodlums killed three people, namely; Hashimu Dan-Daura, Nazifi Adamu and Alhaji Dangude.

Ishaq Usman Kasai,the Chairman of Birnin-Gwari Emirate Progressives Union (BEPU),told journalists on Wednesday night that “the terrorists  operated in the town stylishly  and unchallenged for about an hour.”

According to him; ” the terrorists also returned the following day on 26th July, 2022 around 6:00pm, forcefully looted many shops of traders in the town and on their way back to the forests kidnapped 13 persons at Hayin-Gada of the same Damari community.”

7. Court gives EFCC nod to prosecute Ondo Speaker, lawmakers

An Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure has granted the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) permission to prosecute Ondo Speaker Bamidele Oleyeloogun and some lawmakers over alleged fraud.

Lawyer to the EFCC Frederick Dibang, had filed an application seeking the court’s permission to prosecute the lawmakers for alleged fraud committed in 2019.

Other persons to be prosecuted beside the lawmakers are Felemu Bankole, and a staff of the House of Assembly, Mr. Olusegun Kayode.

The lawmakers were said to have committed the fraud when they collected money to attend a two-day seminar organised by the National Productivity Centre, Lagos but did not show up at the seminar

Those that reportedly collected the money to attend the Seminar included the former Clerk, the Deputy Speaker, the Chairman of the House Committee on Tertiary Education and two members of the Committee on Tertiary Education.

8. Lassa fever deaths hit 162 in 28 weeks – NCDC

Lassa fever deaths have hit 162 in 28 weeks, according to the latest situation report by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The report further showed that 847 confirmed cases of the disease have been recorded from 24 States while 5,752 suspected cases have been reported from all the states of the Federation.

According to the NCDC’s epidemiological report: “In week 28 (July 11 to 17), the number of new confirmed cases decreased from 13 in week 27, 2022 to 5 cases. These were reported from Edo and Ondo States.

9. Police arrest two for snatching car weeks after leaving Lagos prison

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two car snatchers along Egbeda Road.

They were apprehended shortly after seizing a Toyota Corolla 2000 model with registration number LND-664-GF.

Abiodun Nurudeen (36) and Anthony Richard (45) were released on May 5 and June 5 from the Ikoyi correctional facility.

The suspects were caught following a tip-off from members of the public, Police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin said.

The Public Relations Officer noted that the vehicle was snatched around Lekki.

The police urged the owner of the vehicle to come forward with proof of ownership to claim.

10. War: This is our biggest fear – US reacts to Russia’s latest action against Europe

The United States of America has reacted to Russia’s decision to cut the supply of gas to Europe.

According to US officials, Moscow has taken the action in reaction to various sanctions against it from the West.

The Joe Biden administration is now said to be working furiously behind the scenes to keep European allies united against Russia.

Moscow further cut its energy supplies to the European Union, prompting panic on both sides of the Atlantic over potentially severe gas shortages heading into winter, US officials say.

Russia’s state-owned gas company Gazprom on Monday said it would cut flows through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline to Germany in half, to just 20% of its capacity.
