1. Avoid scammers, fake online voter registration – INEC
The Independent National Electoral Commission has urged Nigerians to avoid getting scammed by unscrupulous elements asking people to enroll in ‘Voter Card (PVC)’ online.
The electoral umpire, in a statement on Monday by its National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye Esq, said that the claim by the ‘fake sites’ was not approved by INEC.
According to the commission, claims that the Federal Government has approved individual voter card registration online to avoid the unnecessary crowd in the NIMC centres were false.
The statement read, “Barely 24 hours after the suspension of voter registration, the attention of the Independent National Electoral Commission has been drawn to an online site urging Nigerians to enroll for “VOTER CARD (PVC)” registration claiming that the Federal Government has approved individual VOTER CARD (PVC) registration online to avoid the unnecessary crowd in the NIMC” CENTERS.
2. Aregbesola’s faction planning violent protests, Osun APC alleges
Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress on Monday accused members of a faction in the party backed by the Interior Minister, Rauf Aregbesola, of planning a violent protest in the state and Abuja against the state chairman of the party, Prince Gboyega Famoodun.
In a statement signed by Kola Olabisi, the Media Adviser to Osun APC chairman, the protesters under the aegis of The Osun Progressives, had concluded plan to promote a large-scale disturbance in the state.
The statement said a leader of TOP from the West Senatorial District of the state had been saddled with the responsibility of mobilizing members of the group across the state and some members of the Peoples Democratic Party with a view to sponsoring series of protests against the state leadership of the APC.
“Sequel to the recent conduct of the governorship election in Osun State, an incontrovertible intelligence report has shown that the leadership of a bellicose and belligerent tendency under the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), self-styled The Osun Progressives (TOP), has finetuned, funded and concluded a skillfully orchestrated sinister plan to promote a large-scale disturbance in the political firmament of the state.
3. Group laments PWD, women exclusion in REC nomination
A civil society organisation, The Electoral Hub, has decried the alienation of Persons Living with Disabilities from the 19 Resident Electoral Commissioners recently nominated by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd).
The group also said it was dismayed at the poor representation of women in the nomination.
In a statement on Monday by its Director, Princess Hamman-Obels, the group said the President failed to use the opportunity to right the poor gender representation in his regime.

4. COVID-19: 19 months after, FCTA reopens Abuja’s Millennium Park
Federal Capital Territory FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello has reopened the popular Millennium Park, 19 months after it was closed due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in the territory
The FCT Administration had in December 2021 shut down the park in order to contain the epidemic.
Bello who led officials to the Park on Monday evening lamented that almost 95 per cent of parks in Abuja have totally derailed from the FCTA Park Policy.
He appealed to the media and the public to support the FCTA’s efforts towards rediscovering Abuja from what it was meant to be by the founding fathers.
5. Man kills sister’s friend over N50,000, buries corpse in room
RESIDENTS of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital where shocked to their marrow, when the news broke that a young man, Joseph Ekala, 27, murdered his sister’s girlfriend, Miss Kate, 25, and buried her corpse in a shallow grave in his apartment.
Parading the suspect alongside 13 other suspects at the state police command headquarters on Monday, Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO of the Bayelsa State Command, SP Asinim Butswat said: “One of the most disturbing reports received over the weekend was a case of murder involving a young man and a lady of 25 years old.
“Precisely, on Friday, 29 July 2022, we recieved a disturbing report from Okaka community that a young man named Joseph Ekala, 27-years old murdered one Kate Ugu, 25-years old strangled to death and buried her in a shallow grave in his apartment at Okaka.
6. Army allegedly dehumanize Town Union President in Enugu Community
Officers of the Nigerian Army enforcing curfew imposed on the people of Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State by the state government have allegedly dehumanized a Town Union President of Imufu community, Lawrence Mamah, in the council area.
Mamah, a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police told Vanguard that his problem started when a yet-to-be-identified Army Major commanding the troops enforcing the curfew invited him to his office to demand for the list of members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPoB, and Eastern Security Network, ESN, allegedly operating in his area.
He also informed Vanguard that when he told the army officer that he had no knowledge of the operation of the above-mentioned groups in his area, he allegedly started brutalising him, hitting him with bench and tied his hands like a common criminal.
He further said that even though he introduced himself as a stakeholder in his community, the officer refused to free him, adding that he threatened to kill him should he not present the list he demanded of him.

7. Peter Obi inexperienced to lead Nigeria – Okowa
Delta Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has described the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, as too inexperienced to lead Nigeria.
The vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stated this in an interview with BBC pidgin.
Obi, he said, may have been a former Governor but the experience is not ‘’deep’’ enough to lead Nigeria.
8. ‘No Boko Haram terrorists in Ogun forests’
The Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Security, AIG Olusola Subair (retd), on Monday said he could not confirm whether a Boko Haram kingpin was arrested or not in Ogun State by operatives of the Department of State Service(DSS).
Subair told The Nation he read a report of the arrest of a Boko Haram leader in Ijaiye area of Abeokuta, the State capital, stating only the DSS could know about the incident.
He also debunked claim by Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, that Boko Haram terrorists are already hibernating in the State and were setting up camps in Ogun forests

9. NiMeT DG warns of excessive flooding in next few weeks
The Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof Mansur Bako Matazu, on Monday, warned Nigerians to get prepared for heavy rains in the next two months.
Matazu, while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Monday, said every Nigerian should expect flooding that may wreak havoc across the country in the next few weeks.
According to him, NiMeT had issued several warnings pertaining to flooding, and heavy downpours for Nigerians to take precautions, but unfortunately, many refused to take action against flooding.
He said Nigerians were in the habit of dumping refuse in drainage channels and cutting down trees, which are the main causes of flooding.
10. Gunmen kidnap gold miner in Osun, demand N100m ransom
A gold miner and his driver have been kidnapped along Ilesa-Osogbo road, Osun State.
Sources very close to the kidnap victims, Musibau Adepoju, and his driver, whose name could not be ascertained, disclosed that the duo was abducted on Friday evening.
The victim, who usually operates within gold mining communities around Ilesa, is based in Osogbo alongside his family members and was said to be on his way home before he was waylaid and kidnapped.
