1. IPOB, Kanu not problem but military response – Lawyer
Aloy Ejimakor, a counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Kanu, has said that the problem of Nigeria is not the separatist agitation nor Kanu but the alleged misguided military response to the agitation.
In a statement made available to The PUNCH in Umuahia, Friday evening, Ejimakor said, “The problem is not the separatist agitation, IPOB or Nnamdi Kanu. The problem is the misguided militarist response to it, which, instead of containing it, is actually validating the agitation.”
Kanu, who is still in the Department of State Services’ detention in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, has recently been sided by the United Nations who urged the Federal Government and its agencies to unconditionally release him.
Ejimakor said, “It is referendum that made Atiku Abubakar a Nigerian and which may also make him President.
“It’s through referendum that Midwest region came into being in 1964. This is all within Nigeria, not counting the many nations that were created through referendum, such as Eritrea, Kosovo, South Sudan, etc.”
2. Nigerians knock Keyamo over comments on ASUU strike
Nigerians on social media, Friday, knocked the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, SAN, over his comments regarding the ongoing strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
Keyamo had on Friday night featured on a programme on Channels Television.
When questioned on the plans of the government to ensure a speedy end to the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the human rights activist turned politician noted that the government had done enough and wouldn’t borrow to pay ASUU.
Keyamo further appealed to Nigerian parents to “beg” ASUU.
3. Jonathan leads observation mission to Kenya elections
Former President Goodluck Jonathan, Friday, left for Nairobi where he would be leading a team of observers to Kenya’s general elections scheduled to take place on August 9, 2022.
Jonathan would serve as the Head of the Electoral Observation Mission of the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa, which had deployed a full-fledged short-term team of observers to Kenya.
According to a statement issued by the EISA in Nairobi, the team comprises 21 short-term observers, mainly drawn from Civil Society Organisations, Election Management Bodies and academia from across the continent.

4. Oyetola, APC submit 1,240-page petition
Osun State Governor, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state on Friday submitted a petition at the state election petition tribunal to challenge the outcome of the July 16 governorship election.
The governor was escorted by his wife, Kafayat, the APC Chairman in the state, Prince Gboyega Famodun, and some members of the state executive council.
The petition, which was personally signed by the Governor and the party Chairman, was received by the tribunal secretary.
The petition was filed to challenge the victory of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke, who was declared the winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
Governor Oyetola after signing the documents and handing it over to the tribunal secretary, left the venue without addressing journalists.
5. Gunmen kill ‘eiye’ cult member in Osun
Unknown gunmen on Friday shot an ‘eye’ cult member, Tajudeen Rabiu, 42, in Osogbo in front of his wife’s shop.
It was gathered Rabiu, popularly called ‘spanner’ was at his wife’s shop located at around Ilesa garage park when his assailants arrived in a minibus known as korope and shot him at the chest.
An eye witness, Semiu Isola, told Saturday Vanguard that the assailants came in a korope and walk straight to the shop where the deceased was sitting.
6. Oshiomhole’s former Commissioner dumps APC
A former Commissioner under the administration of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as governor of Edo State and a close ally and from the same Ward, Mr Lucky James has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A letter addressed to the Ward 10 Chairman of APC in Etsako West local government area dated August 4, 2022 and made available to journalists late Friday reads “I write this correspondence from a place of deep and wide thought, resolve and consultations on different strata. Having considered all my harmless and laboured expectations, experiences, sacrifices, contributions and the ironically resultant outcome from Action Congress, Action Congress of Nigeria now All Progressive Congress over the years, I, Chlef Lucky James, wish to tender my resignation as a member of APC.
“By this resignation, I completely disassociate myself from anything in relation to the party, whether in insignia, paraphernalia or association.
“However, this decision was inevitably reached going by a number of unhealthy factors which have dogged the party for years, especially as they affect me personally and my teeming supporters unjustly.

7. Seven policemen arrested in Edo for extortion
Edo Police Command has arrested seven of its personnel for extorting members of the public while on duty.
Edo Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Jennifer Iwegbu, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), in an online statement, vowed the arrested officers, who contravened the law, would face disciplinary action.
She gave the names of the policemen as PC Victor Osabuohign, ASP Godspower Ijebu, Inspector Ebatamole Philip, Inspector Ademola Benjamin, Inspector Inaite Vincent, Inspector Robert Esikise and Inspector Adefaye Samuel.
Iwegbu said: “The attention of Edo State Police Command has been drawn to a video on Twitter, where a policeman, PC Victor Osabuohign, was seen engaging in an extortion conversation with a road user, identified as Architect Bolu.
8. Oborududu wins Nigeria’s second wrestling gold
Blessing Oborududu has claimed second gold medal in the women’s Freestyle 68k against Canada’s Linda Morais in the final with 5-1 in victory by points.

9. 2023: Lagos PDP stalwart, Gbadamosi defects to Peter Obi’s Labour Party
Babatunde Gbadamosi, a stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, has defected to the Labour Party ahead of next year’s elections.
Gbadamosi, who disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Lagos, declared his support for LP presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi.
The statement read in part, “The exit of Peter Obi from the PDP and his subsequent emergence as the Presidential candidate of the LP, and his brilliant choice of Mallam Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed as running mate have rekindled my hope.
10. Association slams FG, says okada ban would compound security challenges
As reactions continue to trail the planned ban of motorcycle operations over security concerns across the country, an association operating under the aegis of National Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association (NATOMORAS), has slammed the Federal Government for attributing security challenges to riders.
The National Executive Secretary of the association, Comrade Sylvester Nandi-Esom, speaking with DAILY POST, in Abuja, said the association has over 14 million members across the country, saying that government was getting its policy wrong by banning motorcycle operations.
He said government, anywhere in the world has a social contract with the people, to ensure the welfare of its citizens and not to create hardships, stressing that the heightening insecurity across the nation was as a result of lack of political will on side of government and not the other way, they were going about it.
