Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Major Newspapers in Nigeria
Punch Newspaper
1. Police working with military to fight insurgency – FPRO
In defence of the alleged abandonment of internal security operations by the police, the Nigeria Police Force has noted that its operatives are working in tandem with military operatives to rid the country of insurgency.
Some security experts had in recent times alleged that the military has been at the forefront in the fight against insecurity and banditry in the country while querying the police for allegedly neglecting its primary role to secure the country internally.
Reacting to this, Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, during a Channels TV programme ‘Sunrise Daily,’ on Tuesday, disclosed its synergy with the military towards ending the menace which has led to widespread chaos across rural communities especially in the northern part of the country.
Adejobi detailed how the police had been working with the armed forces towards ensuring the security of the country and stability of the economy, adding that the police have not been sidelined from the anti-terrorism fight by the government or the military.
2. Don’t proscribe ASUU, fund education – Sowore group
Onyinye-Gandhi Chukwunyere, the Spokesperson for the campaign group of the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has condemned what the group alleged as moves by the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government to blackmail the Academic Staff Union Universities into submission.
The group, in a statement on Tuesday, signed by Chukwunyere, stated that a “report published in some media on August 22, 2022, that the APC government under the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), is considering proscribing ASUU as a way of ending the prolonged strike by the union is outrageous.”
“While the APC’s contempt for the education of Nigerians is well documented, its reported threat to employ draconian and unconstitutional measures to blackmail and bully ASUU into submission is a new low.
“The crisis in the nation’s educational sector merely reflects the larger, multi-sectoral failures of the APC whose hold on power in the last seven years has been an absolute nightmare for the Nigerian people. Like its predecessors in the Peoples Democratic Party, the APC prefers to attack the messenger rather than address the message. It has repeatedly demonstrated its unwillingness to curb profligacy, stop the serial looting of our treasury, and direct resources to properly fund education and reposition the sector as the primary driver of national development.
3. Presidency to governors: Manage flooding in your states
As the rainy season begins in earnest, the Presidency, on Tuesday, challenged states to “face their duties of managing the flooding within their jurisdictions,” explaining that the Federal Government was not mandated to manage such incidents in all 36 states.
This was as it said those calling on the federal government to respond to every outbreak of natural disaster did not display an understanding of Nigerian law.
According to a statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the Presidency argued that the local, state and federal governments have been dealt a sizeable monthly budget sufficient enough to deal with state-level and national-level natural emergencies.
The statement is titled ‘Flooding in several Nigerian states and the triple response structure.’
