1. Arrested Ogun Speaker sleeps in Abuja EFCC custody
The Ogun State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, who was arrested by officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Thursday morning and flown to Abuja, is still in the custody of the anti-graft agency, Thursday night.
An impeccable source within the anti-graft agency confirmed the development to our correspondent Thursday night.
The PUNCH reported that the EFCC flew Oluomo to the nation’s capital for questioning hours after he was arrested and grilled by officials of the commission in Lagos.
As reliably gathered, the embattled lawmaker is currently in the custody of the anti-graft commission in Abuja over alleged misappropriation and embezzlement of funds.
He was said to have been on the wanted list of the commission following his failure to honour the EFCC’s invitation several times.
2. Speaker’s arrest stalls Ogun Assembly sitting
The arrest of the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, by the officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Thursday, disrupted the sitting of lawmakers.
The PUNCH reported that Oluomo was picked up by officials of the anti-graft agency, Thursday morning, at the Muritala Muhammad International Airport, Lagos, over allegations bordering on corruption, forgery and financial impropriety.
It was further gathered that the absence of the Speaker prevented the House from observing its Thursday sitting.
The arrest of Oluomo followed his alleged refusal to honour several invitations by the EFFC.
Our correspondent learnt that, the Deputy Speaker, Akeem Balogun, who is statutorily saddled with the responsibility of conducting the businesses of the Assembly, also could not convene the sitting of the House.
When our correspondent visited the Assembly complex on Thursday, staff members of the Assembly were seen gathering in groups and discussing in a hushed tone.
A source at the Assembly confided in our correspondent that the Speaker’s refusal to honour the EFCC’s invitation was premised on the existing litigation instituted by the Assembly earlier in January this year at the Federal High Court sitting in Abeokuta, against the agency.
3. Troops battle bandits, neutralise two in Kaduna
The Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, has said that the ‘Troops of Operation Forest Sanity’ continued the onslaught on bandits, neutralising two in the dreaded Birnin-Gwari area, Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area of the state.
The commissioner, who made this known in a statement on Thursday, said the troops encountered the bandits while on clearance patrol along the Birnin Gwari-Doka-Sabon Layi-Kuriga-Maganda-Farin Ruwa road.
He said, “troops of Operation Forest Sanity made further gains as they continued fighting patrols and clearance operations in the Birnin Gwari area.
“In operational feedback to the Kaduna State Government, it was reported that the troops embarked on the clearance patrol along the Birnin Gwari-Doka-Sabon Layi-Kuriga-Maganda-Farin Ruwa road.

4. Ayu’s arrogance, ingratitude will cost PDP presidential election – Wike
Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has said the National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Iyorchia Ayu’s “ingratitude” and “arrogance” will cost the party 2023 presidential election.
Wike made this assertion on Thursday while speaking at the inauguration of roads in Ikwerre Local Government Area.
Governor Wike added that those who Ayu described as children brought him out of the gutter and made him the national chairman of the party.
He said, “I thought as a chairman of a party who wants to win elections, your business is to bring peace to your party; your business is not to divide your party.
5. Police confirm kidnap of 24-yr-old law student in Calabar
The Commissioner of Police in Cross River state , CP Aminu Alhassan on Thursday confirmed the abduction of a 24-year-old law student , Miss Dora Effiom from her residence at 17 Joseph Mkpang street, Calabar in Calabar Municipality Local government area of the state.
Vanguard gathered that the girl was whisked away by her abductors in her mum’s car, a Grey Toyota Corolla, 2010 at about 2: am on Wednesday.
Confirming the incident on Thursday , the Commissioner of Police , CP Aminu Alhassan revealed that his Anti Cultism and Kidnapping Squad , led by SP Awodi have swung into action to unmask and arrest those behind the heinous crime.
He stated that the Command will leave no stone unturned in making sure all those involved were brought to book as soon as possible.
6. USAID LEARN donates $48.8m to 3.5m Nigerian children
United State Agency for International Development (USAID) launched the Leveraging Education Assistance Resources in Nigeria (LEARN) to improve early grade reading in the country for the next five years.
This $48.8 million U.S. Mission Nigeria investment in education will provide a better future of millions of Nigerian children, and help lead to thriving, prosperous communities throughout Nigeria.
In a statement made available to journalists the agency said that LEARN to Read will contribute in improving the reading outcomes of more than 3.5 million children in 5,900 schools and in the capacity of more than 35,000 teachers, headteachers, and school support officers to support early grade reading in about 6,000 schools.
“The new USAID activity will ensure that school-age children and youth in Nigeria are able to gain foundational skills, such as literacy and numeracy, safely, while building critical social and emotional skills to progress to higher levels of education, training, and employment,” Supervisory Program Office Director USAID/Nigeria, Stephen Menard said at the launch.

7. Ex-agitators beg Buhari to make Dikio PAP’s substantive boss
The First Phase ex-agitators have appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to make the Interim Administrator, Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) Col. Milland Dixon Dikio (retd), the substantive coordinator of the scheme.
The ex-agitators said Dikio had been outstanding in the management of PAP as an interim administrator and had the capacity to fully actualise the mandate of the programme if given full powers of a substantive coordinator.
Speaking in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday, the National Secretary, First Phase, Pastor Nature Dumale, said Dikio’s commitment in transforming ex-agitators into independent employees and entrepreneurs through his novel Train, Employ and Mentor (TEM) model had started yielding expected results.
8. LP inaugurates 11-member diaspora committee
The National Chairman of the Labour party Julius Abure has inaugurated an 11-member Diaspora Committee to pilot the affairs of its diaspora matter.
The party chairman explained that the committee became imperative following calls to establish chapters across the country.

9. Court declares Oyetola’s appointment illegal, affirms Masifa’s stool vacant
Justice Oyejide Falola of Osun State High Court has nullified Governor Gboyega Oyetola’s chieftaincy appointment and declared it illegal.
The court declared that the Office of Ola-Aresa of Masifa-Ile, the traditional ruler of Masifa-Ile is still vacant till date.
The Osun State Government on Wednesday, August 24, announced Prince Josiah Adeleke Oyewole Awolade as Olaaresa of Masifa in Ejigbo West Local Council Development Area (LCDA).
According to a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Funke Egbemode, last week disclosed the stool Olaaresa of Masifa became vacant on April 23, 2018 following the death of Dr. Mathew Olayiwola Oyekale.
Meanwhile the Osun State High Court on Thursday ruled that the State Government has been misled into taking an illegal action which might not have been deliberate, because it is unusual.
