1. Lagos resident caught stealing car with towing van
A yet-to-be-identified man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to use a towing van to steal a black Camry in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the faulty car was parked outside the premises of a building in the Exalted Community Development Association, Abule Egba.
In a bid to perpetrate the crime, the suspect, who was said to have pretended to own the faulty car, approached operators of a towing vehicle to assist him in towing the vehicle to the Kantangura Market in Abule Egba for repairs.
The operators, before agreeing to tow the car, however, demanded the key and vehicle documents.
2. Reps direct FG to repair Warri-Agbor roads
The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to embark on the reconstruction of the Warri-Sapele-Benin and Sapele-Agbor roads, while also urging the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, to deploy more men to the roads to protect citizens from being attacked.
The House made the call at the plenary on Tuesday following the unanimous adoption of a motion jointly moved by two members, Ben Igbakpa, and Anthony Afe, titled, ‘Need to Reconstruct Warri-Sapele-Benin and Sapele-Amukpe to Agbor roads in Delta State.’
In the motion presented by Igbakpa, the lawmakers noted that the importance of road infrastructure in socio-economic development could not be over-emphasised, thereby reiterating the need to reconstruct the “parlous” Warri-Sapele-Benin and Sapele-Amukpe- Agbor roads that serve Edo, Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states, with other South-South states in particular and Nigeria in general.
According to the lawmakers, the major road of about 104.5km distance was constructed 27 years ago and is the most preferred route for articulated vehicles used for oil and gas haulage operating from Delta State to other parts of Nigeria.
3. Abiodun welcomes Amusan with multi-million naira house, N5m
The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, on Tuesday announced a cash reward of N5m and a house to world, Commonwealth and African 100m hurdles champion Oluwatobi Amusan.
The Governor also named Amusan an Ogun State Sports Ambassador.
Abiodun, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin, stated, “So, you (Amusan) will be our Sports Ambassador; I am happy that you said you are not from any other state. You are from Ogun and not from Lagos and you want to come back home. We also want to ensure that you come back home. We want to assure you that as you come back home, you have a home here in the state. So, in view of that, we are also going to be presenting to you a home in Ijebu-Ode. On top of that, we will be giving you a small token, we will be donating to you the sum of N5m.”
Abiodun noted that his administration was on course to giving the Ijebu-Ode Stadium the necessary facelift it needed.

4. Prioritise children’s care, stem tide of sexual abuse, govt, parents told
With statistics showing that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 10 boys would be abused before age 18 in Nigeria, Cece Yara Foundation has called on the government at all levels, and parents man guardians to prioritise children’s care to stem the tide of sexual abuse among them.
To this end, the Foundation last week in Lagos trained over 100 Patient and Proprietary Medicine Vendors (PPMVs) as first medical responders in Lagos.
Speaking during the training tagged: “Building the Capacity of Health Workers on Response and Care to Survivors of Sex and Gender-based Violence”, the Chief Executive Director, Cece Yara Foundation, Adetutu Ajigbodun also stressed the need to make sexual abusers understand the consequences of their actions.
5. Experts worry over rising heart failure cases in Middle East, Africa
Experts have called for urgent action to stop and reverse the steep rise in heart failure occurring across the Middle East and Africa, MEA even as it said the Middle East and Africa parades the lowest age for heart failure globally.
Handing down the warning, in their publication in the Journal of the Saudi Heart Association, a group of regional experts, who collectively outlined the primary gaps in awareness, diagnosis and prevention of heart failure in the region agreed on a set of recommendations for policymakers to take forward.
The experts’ paper highlighted that heart failure is associated with significant morbidity and mortality and considerably impacts patients’ quality of life, as well as incurring a substantial economic burden, with a total estimated cost of US $1.92 Billion.
It further noted that the average age a person will develop heart failure in the MEA region is significantly lower than elsewhere: Africa (53 years), the Middle East (56.4 years), North Africa (58.79 years), Asia (60 years) and Europe (70 years).1-3
6. Over 67% of women in Nigeria’re anaemic —UNICEF
The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, yesterday said over 67 percent of women in Nigeria are anaemic.
UNICEF Nutrition Specialist, Mrs Ngozi Onuora who made the disclosure during a five day ‘Community of Practice workshop on Building Capacity to Mainstream Nutrition into the Investment Agenda, lamented the effect of malnutrition on the overall health and wellbeing of the mother and child.
While speaking on the objective of the workshop and the ‘Effective Management of First 1,000 days Window of Opportunity for Every Child – Strategic Preventive Option’, Mrs Onuora noted that the issue of malnutrition is multi-layered, emphasising that the nutrition of the mother and child in the first 1,000 days of the baby’s life starting from the first nine months in the womb and two years after birth remains critical to the well being of the mother and child.
