1. Old persons shouldn’t dominate Nigerian politics — Former envoy
A former ambassador to the Scandinavian countries; Sweden, Denmark and Norway and a retired permanent secretary, Dr. Godknows Igali on Saturday, described as troubling, a pattern of Nigerian politics were older people were still playing the major roles, whereas in many countries young aspirants have been dominating the political space.
He also called on Nigerians to vote for candidates that have ideas and positive track records in the 2023 elections.
Igali who is also Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Board of Federal University of Technology, Akure, raised the concern in an interview with Journalists during a breakfast seminar tagged, ‘Let’s talk Politics 2.0’, with the theme, ‘2023 and beyond: Leadership, Politics and Citizenship Engagement’, organised by St. James Anglican Church, Asokoro in Abuja.
He said, “I have raised some fundamental issues about the morphology of politcal party primaries because some patterns were a little bit troubling. While many countries have young aspirants, there is still a lot of gerontocracy in ours.
2. Buhari mourns victims of Anambra boat accident
The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Sunday, expressed sadness over the boat accident in Anambra state, which killed at least 76 persons.
He also directed the relevant agencies to check the safety protocols on the vessels plying the waters to ensure their river worthiness.
This is according to a statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, titled ‘President Buhari expresses grief over Anambra boat accident.’
The PUNCH reports that a boat reportedly carrying 85 persons capsized due to rising floods in Ogbaru area of the state, with emergency bodies confirming a death toll of 76.
Following the tragedy, the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority and the National Emergency Management Agency have embarked on rescue and recovery missions.
3. Conflicting figures trail Anambra boat crash, church collapses
Conflicting figures are surrounding the number of dead bodies and recovered persons at the scene of a boat crash that occurred at the Umunankwo community in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Friday.
While the Anambra State Government through a statement from the governor’s press secretary, Christian Aburime, late on Saturday, indicated that more 30 people had been rescued while six people including two kids and two ladies were confirmed dead, the former Transition Committee Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area, Arinze Awogu, gave the figures of recovered dead bodies as 13, adding that before the end of the day, more bodies would be recovered.
Again, an indigene of the area, identified as Eze Ogbugbulu, said 16 bodies had been recovered, including children.
The statement from the governor’s press secretary with the caption, ‘Update on the Ogbaru boat mishap’, said the engine of the boat failed three minutes into the journey and the surging waves hit the boat on a collapsed bridge and it subsequently capsized.

4. Kwankwaso commissions Presidential Campaign office, promises access to education
The Presidential candidate of the New Nigerian People Party (NNPP) Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has commissioned his presidential campaign office in Kano and he describes his party as the fastest-ever growing political party in Nigeria.
He added that the NNPP is already rubbing shoulders with other major political parties in the country within a few months of coming to the limelight.
He described this as a sign that gives people the confidence that there are going to be changes in their favour in 2023.
Kwankwaso, who was amused by the crowd that received him, stated this on Sunday in Kano at the commissioning of the Presidential as well as the Governorship campaign office located in the Sharada area of the Kano metropolis.
5. My imprisonment was political, but I leave everything to God — Dariye
A former governor of Plateau state, Joshua Dariye has said his imprisonment was “politically motivated.”
He made this assertion in an interview on Channels Television’s Newsnight.
Recall that Dariye was jailed for involving in a sum of N1.126bn fraud.
Dariye was governor of Plateau between 1999 and 2007.
In 2007, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged Dariye over allegations of diverting N1.126 billion from the Plateau government’s ecological fund.
6. Peter Obi condemns attack on supporters in Nasarawa
The presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi has condemned the attack on his supporters in Nasarawa State that led to serious bodily harm to Joshua Alamu.
The attack took place on Saturday when supporters of Obi rallied in support of his presidential ambition.
One of Obi’s supporters, Jamilu Sufi posted a photo of a seriously injured Joshua, as he was receiving treatment and wrote: “Dear @PoliceNG, Our attention has been drawn on the attack to Mr. Joshua Alamu, at Nasarawa State during @NgLabour sensitization yesterday, we call on you to protect the life of our citizen and bring perpetrators to book.”
The Labour Party’s presidential candidate decried the attack, saying the Nigerian civic and political space must remain open for the Nigerian people to exercise their constitutional rights of freedom of assembly.

7. No attack on Tinubu’s convoy in Osun — Police
The Police have denounced a deceptive viral video indicating that the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s convoy was attacked in Osun State by youths.
The police said there was nothing of such, stating the video was false.
A statement by Osun police spokesperson Yemisi Opalola dispelled the viral video.
It said: “The attention of Osun State Police Command has been drawn to the news making the rounds and video trending on social media that; Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s convoy was attacked by Osun Youths on the 8th of October 2022.
8. Oyo APC knocks Makinde over comments on ex-deputy
The All Progressives Congress in Oyo state (APC) has berated Governor Seyi Makinde over some comments he made against his erstwhile deputy, Rauf Olaniyan, describing the development as not only unfortunate and shameful but also least expected from a sitting Executive Governor of a state.
Makinde who featured on a radio programme, State Affairs on an Ibadan based radio station, responded to many questions bothering on the crisis confronting his party (PDP) at all levels, governance in Oyo state, his chances in 2023 among other things.
The governor also made some startling revelation on why he moved against Olaniyan who he got impeached by the State House of Assembly on July 18, 2022 and replaced immediately with Barrister Bayo Lawal.
Oyo APC while reacting to Makinde’s revelation said, in a statement issued yesterday by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, that the governor deserved condemnation for what it described as “an act of Executive recklessness coming from a power drunk and vindictive character who found himself in power by default.

9. Oil bunkering: Community leader calls for investigation as one dies in Akwa Ibom
A suspected oil thief has reportedly died in the Qua Iboe River, Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, while fleeing from marine policemen; his remains were recovered after three days at the creek.
The deceased, whose name could not be ascertained, was said to have jumped into the river with other suspects(at large) to evade arrest by the officers who had already apprehended one of the gang members during a raid in the creek last week.
It was gathered that the police, who acted on intelligence from members of the community, met the suspects about vandalizing the gas pipeline, which supplies gas to the Ibom Power Plant at Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of the state.
Addressing journalists in Uyo, the state capital, over the weekend, Rev Rex Akpan Uko, a community leader in Ikot Ebidang community in Onna LGA, where the pipelines are located, called on the police at the zone to ensure that the matter is discreetly investigated and those behind pipeline vandalism in the area brought to book.
