LASPEMA Tasks Horticulturists On Setbacks/Incidental Open Spaces Usage

The Lagos State Planning and Environmental Monitoring Agency (LASPEMA) has tasked Horticulturists in Lagos to support government policies on the appropriate usage of Setbacks and Incidental Open Spaces (IOS) in line with the present administration’s commitment to sanitise and control the usage of setbacks and IOS across the state.

Eko Hot Blog reports that Tpl. Daisi Oso, General Manager of LASPEMA made the appeal at an event organised by the Agency, in collaboration with the Alliance of Horticulturists, for stakeholders in Lekki, stressing that the measure will go a long way in supporting inclusive planning.

He explained that the programme with the theme: “Integrating the Informal Sector in the Delivery of LASPEMA Mandate on Setbacks Beautification”, was aimed at encouraging an eco-friendly environment and also supporting the activities of Horticulturists occupying the State’s Setbacks and Incidental Open Spaces without compromising the Physical Planning Regulations of the State.

While noting that there is a need to ensure the proper usage of Setbacks and IOS as stipulated in the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development plans, Oso described the forum as a platform that avails horticulturists a deep understanding of the implication of occupying any space without first consulting with LASPEMA.

In his words: “LASPEMA is bringing to our streets a high standard that will transform our urban face into an ideal place, networking and controlling all activities for a global competitive inclusive planning best practice around the world”.

He stressed that the agency will encourage innovative technologies for horticultural development as done with the vulcanisers who now have Solar Powered Equipment machines that are environmental friendly.

The General Manager explained that the informal sector, based on demographic and economic data, remains the biggest sector in Africa, hence, the need for government to embark on a series of measures, interventions and support to encourage informal business operations for economic growth and development.

Oso also noted that LASPEMA is the only Agency with statutory responsibility to regulate, monitor and designate setbacks for use in line with the State’s Regional, Developmental and Action Plans.

Earlier, the Founder/Chairman Alliance of Horticulturists in Lagos, Lady Lauretta Asemota affirmed the need to integrate all stakeholders with the State Government policies and programmes.

She said the approach will help bridge the gap between the government and other stakeholders, thereby giving the opportunity for improved trust between the government and its citizens.

Asemota also said that the interface with LASPEMA is an opportunity to exchange ideas and at the same time create awareness about their operation as Horticulturists in the State.

While commending the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s administration for driving the vision of making Lagos a 21st Century Smart City, she pledged her organisation’s readiness to cooperate with the LASPEMA in sanitising the road Setbacks/Incidental Open Spaces in the State.
