1. My administration paid N70bn pension, gratuities – Abiodun
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, said that his administration has paid over N70bn as gratuity and pension to retirees in the last three and a half years.
The governor, who stated this at Ijebu-Ode during the Town Hall Meeting on the 2023-2025 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and 2023 Budget for Ogun East Senatorial District, also said the quarterly payment for pensioners had been increased from N500m to N600m.
The governor, who took a swipe at the previous government for failing to pay the retirees their entitlements, said the amount was huge, but his administration was doing the needful to ensure that retirees enjoyed the fruits of their hard work.
This was contained in a statement made available to The PUNCH on Monday.
2. I’ll rescue Nigeria from its ‘failed state’ – Obi
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party and former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, on Monday, said he would rescue Nigeria from failed its ‘failed state’ if elected president in 2023.
He argued that when a country was no longer in control of the economy and security, such a country is nothing but a failed state.
The Presidential hopeful, however, added that if elected president in 2023, he would positively change the narrative.
The former Anambra helmsman told the gathering that comprised of the Arewa Consultative Forum, Northern Elders Forum, Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation, Jamiyyar Matan Arewa, the Center for Historical Development Research(Arewa House) as well as the Arewa Research and Documentation Project, at an interactive session in Kaduna, on Monday that Nigeria was not bereft of ideas but institutional weakness and lack of political will to effect for genuine change that would better the lives of Nigerians.
3. Lewandowski wins top scorer award
Robert Lewandowski received the award for last season’s top goalscorer, renamed the Gerd Mueller Trophy, for the second straight year at the Ballon d’Or ceremony on Monday.
The 34-year-old, who joined Barcelona from Bayern Munich in the close season, scored 57 goals in 56 matches for club and country last term.

5. Peter Obi ‘arrested, detained’ me in Anambra in 2013 – El-Rufai
Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has how the presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi arrested him in Anambra state when Obi was the governor of the state in 2013.
El-Rufai, who made this disclosure at an interactive session of Arewa Joint Committee in Kaduna on Monday, stated that Obi arrested and detained him for 48 hours.

6. UN condemns discovery of 92 naked migrants at Greece-Turkey border
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has said it is “deeply distressed” by the discovery of almost 100 naked men at the border between Greece and Turkey.
According to BBC, the two European countries have blamed each other for the predicament of the 92 migrants as Greece laid the blame at Turkey’s door, saying its “behaviour” was a “shame for civilization.”
In reaction, Turke described its neighbour’s claims as “fake news” and accused it of “cruelty.”
As both nations blamed each other, the United Nation’s refugee agency called for an investigation and said it was “deeply distressed by the shocking reports and images.”
Greek police said they rescued the 92 men who were discovered naked, and some with injuries, close to its northern border with Turkey on Friday.

7. Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, 23 others held by security agencies – Relatives allege
No fewer than 24 persons, including a member of the legal team representing the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, Pius Awoke are said be currently unaccounted following their alleged arrest by security operatives.
Relatives of the missing persons, (including their wives and children) and another member of the Kanu legal team, Nnaemeka Ejiofor alleged that they are being held in the detention camps of the Department of State Services (DSS).
They spoke in Abuja on Monday while giving details of past efforts to ascertain their whereabouts and secure their freedom.
Ejiofor said the 24 persons were part of hundreds of people in different courts in Nigeria most of whom have now become victims of forced disappearance from the custody of the DSS, Police and Nigerian Army.
He said: “Once a person is forced to disappear, such a person loses the protection of the law. The persons under this unlawful detention are purely under the state of nature and in these days of trading in human parts one cannot tell if they have been balkanized and sold in bits and pieces.
8. Why we’ve drawback in economic performance – Osinbajo
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on Monday, reemphasized the need for an effective synergy between the fiscal and monetary aspects of Nigeria’s economy.
Osinbajo spoke at the 3rd Ministerial Performance Review Retreat, held at the Old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Office of the Vice President, Mr Laolu Akande, Osinbajo also spoke on how to better manage the country’s foreign exchange rate.
In his presentation titled “The Buhari Administration: Reflections on the Journey So far”, the Vice President, who detailed some of the game-changing achievements of the Federal Government said there some areas of concern in the economy.
According to him, “the first is the synergy between fiscal and monetary policy. The failure of that synergy has led to unnecessary drawbacks in our economic performance and planning. What imports are eligible for foreign exchange must agree with the fiscal ambitions for manufacturing and industry.”

The federal government has described the recent killings of Nigerians in South Africa as callous.
The Consulate General of Nigeria in South Africa in a statement issued Monday said the killings, which happened In the last three weeks, were unnecessary.
It said: “The Consulate General of Nigeria, Johannesburg, has received with grave concern reports of recent violent killings of Nigerians in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal Province.
“The killings, which happened In the last three weeks, are unnecessary, condemnable, and utterly callous. The Consulate General is saddened by these developments and hereby extends its heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims.”
10. I will end insecurity in Nigeria – Tinubu
The All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, has promised to end insecurity in Nigeria.
Tinubu vowed to ensure full exploration of the oil reserves in the Benue trough and Chad basin for the development of the North and the country.
The former Lagos helmsman spoke on Monday at a meeting with some Northern groups in Kaduna.
The APC flagbearer said there was abundant oil and gas in the Benue Trough, Chad Basin, and other prospective locations in the North.
Tinubu pledged to complete the ongoing Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and the trans-Saharan gas pipeline project.
