1. We will end oil theft, vandalism – Youth council
The National Youth Council of Nigeria has reiterated its determination to put an end to oil theft/bunkering, pipeline vandalism and adulteration of petroleum products in Nigeria.
The council disclosed this on Monday by the Secretary of its Directorate of Petroleum and Solid Minerals and National Coordinator on the fight against oil theft and illegal bunkering, pipeline vandalism and adulteration of petroleum products, Nixon Udoka Ahanonu.
Addressing newsmen in Delta State, during a surveillance patrol of the Taskforce Committee to gather information on the illegal activities by perpetrators of economic sabotage in the oil and gas sector, Ahanonu said no amount of intimidation could deter his committee from exposing the activities of the people involved in the criminal activity.
“No amount of intimidation can stop Nigerian youths from this fight against oil theft and illegal bunkering, pipeline vandalism and adulteration of petroleum products. We have received several threats and attacks from the perpetrators of this heinous economic sabotage in the oil and gas sector in Nigeria, since we commenced surveillance patrol.
2. N’Delta reps demand minister’s resignation over Bayelsa flood comment
Niger Delta House of Representative members have called for the resignation of the Humanitarian Minister, Sadiya Farouq, over her comments about Bayelsa not being the most affected state hit by the ravaging floods.
The minister had earlier stated that according to data provided, Jigawa State was the most-hit state.
The Niger Delta lawmakers however, have described the data as insulting in a media briefing on Monday in Abuja, while the minister received knocks from other concerned groups and Nigerians.
The lawmakers added that should the minister refuse to resign, the President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), should sack her.
3. Ibadan couple, Internet fraudsters bag jail terms
The Oyo State High Court, Ibadan, presided over by Justice Iyabode Yerima has convicted and sentenced a couple; Aladenusi Ayodeji and Sadiat Rafiu to jail terms for cybercrime.
A statement on Monday by the Head, Media and Publicity of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Wilson Uwujaren, stated that the couple was convicted alongside eight others on separate one count each.
Other convicts are Adekoya Ojo, Faruq Kolapo, Adekanmi Emmanuel, Omokaro Berry, Ajayi Lawrence, Babalola Samuel and Bolaji Toheeb.
All the convicts, the anti-graft agency said, pleaded guilty to the charges preferred against them by the Ibadan Zonal Command of the EFCC.

4. Updated: FG to resume Kaduna-Abuja train service, links 36 state capitals with railways
Eight months after terrorists bombed the Kaduna-Abuja train corridor and kidnapped scores of passengers leading to the suspension of services, the Federal Government is set to resume passenger lifting on the route before the end of this month.
The Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Jaji Sambo, made the announcement in Abuja on Monday while giving an update on the achievements of the ministry between 2015 and 2022, said also that the federal government also plans to link up the 36 state capitals in Nigeria with rail network in order to provide seamless means of transportation for the citizens.
Sambo, who admitted the pains thrown up by the March 2022 attack on the Kaduna-Abuja train route, said that the government had learnt many lessons from the atrocity and also adopted many measures to prevent future attacks and give the users of the service a sense of security and safety.
While assuring that all the kidnapped passengers had been released and reunited with their families and loved ones, Sambo stated that the rail lined had been provided with 24-hour security monitoring system to ensure constant real time surveillance and control.
5. INEC did not disqualify our candidates in Lagos – PDP
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, has denied reports making the rounds that some of its candidates were disqualified by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to contest the 2023 general election.
Hakeem Amode, Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, denied the reports in a statement on Monday in Lagos and described it as a ”figment of the imagination of the opposition”.
“The PDP leadership in Lagos state woke up to the story which purported that INEC had disqualified 21 candidates of the party in the state, crediting the story to our leader, Chief Bode George, with utmost embarrassment.
“The PDP in Lagos state will like to assure all our candidates, our members and supporters that there is no such thing and the news is not true.
6. Navy rescues 10 crew members from capsized trawler in Lagos
The Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT, Monday, rescued 10 crew members from a fishing trawler christened OLOKUN XII which capsized within the Lagos channel in the early hours of the morning.
The fishing trawler was being towed by its sister trawler OLOKUN IV within the Lagos channel when the vessel collided with a merchant vessel, MSC CORUNA, leading to its capsize.
NNS BEECROFT patrol team which was on a routine patrol, succeeded in rescuing 10 crew members from the trawler.

7. Kano comedians get 40 lashes for defaming Ganduje
Two standup comedians in Kano state, Mubarak Isa Muhammad and Nazifi Muhammad Bala, on Monday got unusual punishments for defaming the character of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje on their Tiktok accounts.
Kano State Magistrate Court presided over by Aminu Muhammad Gabari
on Monday ordered that the duo be thrashed 20 lashes of the cane.
Gabari also ruled that the two comedians will sweep and wash the toilets on the premises of the Magistrate Court located at Noman’s Land area of Kano metropolis for 30 days.
First Information Report had accused the entertainment duo of defaming Ganduje’s character on their verified Tiktok account.
“They will receive 20 lashes each, to be administered in the public. They should also sweep and wash the toilets of Justice Aloma Mukthar Court Complex in No-man’s-land,” the judge ruled.
8. UK issues fresh security advice
The United Kingdom UK has advised its citizens against visiting 22 States in Nigeria.
Though no reason was given in the latest travel advice, it was however gathered it may not be unconnected with the security challenges in the country.
UK has however removed the Federal Capital Territory(FCT) from the list of cities its citizens should not visit, though it warned that some risks remain.
The latest warning is coming barely 14 days after UK, the United States and four others raised the alarm of possible terror attacks in FCT.
The US also evacuated non-essential staff who wanted to leave the country in the process.
According to the latest travel advice on Monday, the UK stated that visits to the 22 States should only be essential.

9. Suit seeking exit of Igbo extraction out of Nigeria for hearing Jan 27
Justice Inyang Edem Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed January 27, 2023 for hearing in a contentious legal action seeking the exit of the Igbo nation out of Nigeria.
The suit instituted by a group of Kano elders led by Nastura Ashir Shariff, was fixed for hearing by Justice Ekwo, following confirmation by the plaintiffs that four more groups have filed different applications to join in the suit.
The Judge, however, said that the contending various applications by interest groups seeking to join the suit would first be resolved to determine the actual number of groups to be listed either as plaintiffs or defendants.
During the proceedings, counsel to the Kano elders group, Mr. Suleiman Idrees, told the Judge that four other groups have served him with different motions seeking to be joined in the legal action.
10. Peter Obi vows never to attend debate where Tinubu, Atiku are absent
The Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has vowed never to attend debates if his counterparts from the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, do not show up.
Obi said he would back out of any debate where presidential candidates send surrogates or running mates, even at the last minute.
He disclosed this through the LP’s Presidential Campaign Director General, Doyin Okupe.
Addressing a press conference on Monday in Abuja, Okupe said, “Yesterday’s event (Arise TV Presidential Town Hall meeting) was clearly for Presidential candidates, not Vice Presidential candidates.
